What is a Career Shift?

What is a Career Shift?

“The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle.” - Steve Jobs

A career shift is more than just changing jobs. It's changing the kind of job that you do. Some people have difficulty switching careers even though they hate what they're doing because they don't know how to get started. It's not unusual to shift careers though. You might fall into the line of work that you're in out of necessity and get to the point that you're just sick and tired of doing it. You might think about your old dreams and goals that you had before you had to work for a living, and decide that you'd rather be following those dreams than doing whatever you're doing to earn a paycheck.

Forbes Online reports some interesting career change statistics. They reported that close to half of all working Americans are considering changing careers. Although they said it seemed to be most beneficial to change careers between the ages of 25 and 35, workers of all generations were considering a career shift. They reported that toxic work environments, limited growth opportunities and work life balance challenges drove people to consider a changing careers. Unfortunately, needing to earn the amount of money that they were currently making was forcing some people to stay in a career where they weren't happy. Why We Change Careers?

“No matter how long you have traveled in the wrong direction, you can always turn around.”- sibcareercoaching.com

Career changes are not done lightly, they are done for big reasons. You might be pursuing dreams or getting out of a toxic environment. You might want to develop more personally, or earn more money. You might also be burned out.

Dreams

We've all heard the story before. Someone took a job just because they had to earn money, but it wasn't what they wanted to do with their life. So, they laid low, biding their time for as long as they needed to in an unfulfilling career until they had an opportunity to pursue their dreams and do what they always wanted to do. Whether it was your dream to be a pilot, or chef, a veterinarian, or even a stay at home parent, one big reason why you might decide. To change careers is so you can pursue old dreams that you've not been able to.

Toxic Work Culture

Being mistreated on the job is a big reason why a lot of people quit job sites, or leave entire job fields completely. Harassment from upper management, lack of opportunity, favoritism, or mandatory overtime of exhausted employees creates a hostile work environment that makes some people completely step away from an industry for good. The belief that you will be treated better elsewhere can make you take a risk by leaving a job that you know you can keep. You may decide it’s worth sacrificing a familiar career for one that seems better. Find out the power of sacrifice here: The Surprising Power of Making Sacrifices

Personal Development

Dead end jobs leave no room for personal growth and make some people feel like they're going nowhere in life. Maybe you have made it to the top of your career, and there's no place else to go. If you want a job that challenges you, helps you to learn new skills, or even allows travel, and your current career doesn't allow it, a change to another career field might provide that. Some people are content to earn a paycheck at a job where nothing changes, but other people need to grow.

A Desire for More Income

Some careers provide a terrible income and even the top of their pay scale isn't enough. If you're working full-time at one job and there's no way for your income to go up, you might take a second or even third job to make ends meet. However, some people don't want to work that many hours and they look around to see if other job fields pay better. Let's face it, we all have bills to pay, and we all want to save money for retirement. There is nothing wrong with leaving a poorly paying career for one that compensates you better. Finding a career that compensates you well is a form of self-care, but you can use magic for self-care too. Find out how here: Magical Care for Self in Stressful Times

Career Burnout

It's entirely possible that you will change careers because you are burned out. Career burnout is when you're so tired of your career that it keeps you chronically exhausted, and no amount of taking time off makes you feel better. You might dread waking up in the morning because you know you have to go into a job that's got you emotionally exhausted. You might start making lame excuses to call off, and daydream about getting fired. Switching to a different career can take the stress from burnout away.

Are Career Changes Difficult?

Are Career Changes Difficult?

“ To improve is to change. To be perfect is to change often.”- Winston S. Churchill

Yes and no. It depends on who you are. Some people are so eager to change careers, that nothing will deter them. No amount of nervousness while they are learning a new career bothers some people. No amount of money spent for new skills training seems too much. Some people aren't scared of taking a chance at all, and are more afraid of feeling stuck where they don't want to stay. Other people feel a major disconnect from what they've spent years doing when they change careers. It's a big adjustment to do something different and emotionally trying to leave behind people who you have known and worked with for years.

It can be difficult breaking into a new career with little or no experience, and some people give up the search early because they are discouraged by this. Other people believe that every no takes them closer to a yes and no amount of being turned down makes them stop trying. It really depends on how much you want to make a career change as to how difficult it will feel. Being patient and waiting for the right opportunity is worth it to some people, while some people have zero tolerance for it. Even if you’re not a patient person, you can learn to be. Signs it’s Time to Shift Careers

“Take this job and shove it!”- Johnny Paycheck

A complicated list of signs that it's time to shift careers can be found all over the Internet and in best selling books. However, there is only one reason that you need so that you know it's time to shift careers. When you decide it is. If friends or family members or even peers at your job tell you that you're burnt out and you need to change careers, but you don't want to, you don't have to. If everything seems to be going perfect and everybody who you know respects and admires your performance on the job, but you would rather be a parachuting instructor than a businessperson, it's time to shift careers. Nobody can decide that it's time to stay or go but you.

How to Change Your Career?

How to Change Your Career

“ Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.”- Barack Obama

Complicated methods for changing careers can be found everywhere. You can talk to people who have a five year plan to shift into their dream career. Some people use prayers, spell work, or consult professionals to help them change their careers. However, you can change careers in five simple steps. Be patient, take a dare and dream, reach out, take chances, but be open.

Be Patient

The author once had a career change two weeks after she decided she wanted it. She was newly engaged and wanted to move cross country from the Midwest out to the desert Southwest, and she wanted her first job in management. She made one phone call to a consultant in her field, and two weeks later, had interviewed, and was accepted for her first management position. It doesn't always happen that fast. New careers sometimes entail university degrees, or years of climbing a corporate ladder to get to where you want to be. Do you have the patience to stick it out no matter how long it takes? To make that change happen?

Do you have the patience to learn the new skills that it takes to transition into the new career you want to? Do you have the patience with the search to find out what it takes to make the change to begin with? Do you have the patience to deal with the unknown while you're waiting for answers? Do you have the patience for class registration, testing, and certification? All of these things and more might be required before you change careers. Have the patience to do all that it takes, and you can change careers. Change is coming but you have to wait. Find out how here: Advice on Patience and Waiting for Good Things

Dare to Dream

Listening to your inner voice when you're deciding what you want to do with your career can be terrifying. You might worry that you're being unrealistic or that you're asking the universe for too much, but are you really? What did you dream about doing when you were a child? Did you imagine that you were a clown in the circus? What makes you think you can't do that? People do it every day. Did you dream of owning your own business? Other people do that, so why can't you? Our dreams tell us a lot about who we are and what we were born to do. Fulfilling those dreams with your career gives your life meaning and helps you to be your best self.

Reach Out

Talk to other professionals in the field that you're interested in for advice on how to transition. Interview at entry level jobs and find out what credentials they require. Reach out to organizations that train people for the career that you want to step into. Reach out to the Human Resources Department at the company where you currently work and see what opportunities they have available in house. A career change might only be one phone call away. So what are you waiting for? Use your personal magic to transform your career. Find out how here: Using Personal Transformation Magic

Be Open

Be open to suggestions from experts, and try everything. Be open to new possibilities that you had not considered while you're looking to see what's available. Be open to learning new things about yourself that can help you to make the career change you want. Be open to speaking with people about things that you initially don't want to hear about. You never know where the answer might lie, so be open to finding the answer everywhere. Most of all, be open to how much potential you have. People change careers all the time, and so can you.

Take a Chance

After you have done everything else, next comes the scary part. You're going to have to step out of your comfort zone and start anew. The older you are, it's possible that it will be harder to change careers. People don't always like to give young people a chance either. Changing routines, learning new skills, and trying to get established in a brand new career field can all be terrifying. Do it anyway. Wonderful and new things await you when you take chances to create positive change.

A Last Word

“ The planet does not need more successful people. The planet desperately needs more peacemakers, healers, restorers, storytellers, and lovers of all kinds.” – The Dalai Lama XIV

Revisiting the question of “What do you want to be when you grow up?”, people rarely say things like, “I want to be a happy person” , or “I want to make the world a better place.” As adults, when people say, “Tell me about yourself”, most people immediately answer what they do for a living. They rarely say things like “I am an emotionally sensitive person whose focus is on my relationships.”

Careers decide how we earn money. Our reputation and position in society are mostly decided by our job and career. They are not who we are and should not be how we define ourselves. If you lose a job or feel like you struck out in your career, you’re not a failure. Not as long as you are true to who you are inside. The Dalai Lama said it best- we really don’t need more successful people in careers. We need the best of YOU to make the world a better place.
