The Case Against Blind Faith - Does It Ever Make Sense?

Some people and disciplines demand blind faith, and that nobody questions them. Find out why questioning things and people is a good idea and if there is ever a time when you should believe exactly what you’re told with no doubts.

Faith is highly praised, and if you don't have faith in people, they might get angry with you. After getting to know someone and learning to trust them over time, it's easy to have faith in them. Blind faith is different. It means you believe what you're told just because you're told that it's true. Even though blind faith is praised as a virtue, a lot of times it's not. Join Mysticsense to find out why blind faith isn’t wise. Find out what faith itself is as opposed to blind faith. Find out why to question what you’re told and exactly how to do it. Then find out when it’s wise to put your complete and unquestioning faith in someone. Read on to see how to know if it’s time to believe or question what you are told.

What is Faith?

What is Faith?

Faith means you believe that something is true. We have faith in things, we have faith in people, and we have faith in our religion. If we never had faith in anything, we would be too afraid to drive in our car, terrified that it would break down. We would never have relationships because we wouldn't have faith in people to be kind to us. We wouldn't have enough faith to hire anybody at jobs, because we would constantly be suspicious. Most of all we wouldn't have any faith in ourselves and that's not good.

We have faith so that we don't overthink things. Every time you go down a set of stairs, you have faith you won't fall. Every time you take a trip in an airplane, you have faith the plane won't crash. When you adopt a pet, you have faith that it won't attack you. When you eat, you have faith that the people cooking the food cooked it thoroughly and that you won't get food poisoning. If we didn't have a healthy amount of faith, we couldn't do anything. Doubt can be good sometimes though, and you can read about why here: Why Having Doubts is Good Sometimes

Faith vs Blind Faith

While faith can be a good thing, blind faith isn't always. Faith means belief in something. Blind faith means belief in something without investigating to discover whether it's true or not. You hear a lot of talk about blind faith by religious leaders, by administration at companies, by state, federal, and world legislators, and even from parents to children. It means unquestioning belief that a thing is true, or someone is 100% trustworthy. It means doing exactly what you're told, believing exactly what you're told, and thinking the things that people tell you to without questioning them.

Blind faith gives someone else complete control of you. Blind faith can be extremely dangerous for exactly this reason. At what point does blind faith become a habit? At a certain point you either have to think for yourself, or other people will lead you around for the rest of your life. You might think that you can trust someone or something completely, but what if you can't? It's something to consider. Something else to consider is whether your boyfriend is a player or not. Why People Want Blind Faith

People who call for blind faith do this for one of two reasons. Either they don't want anyone questioning them, or they are afraid of what will happen if they have to do everything on their own. It's scary to be the one to come up with all the answers sometimes. Wouldn't it be nice if you could look to someone else you could trust completely to do everything for you? Someone who is right all the time? Someone who cares deeply about you? People who are afraid of being wrong or who don't have faith in themselves to do the right thing can be the number one advocate for blind faith.

Some people have a problem with being questioned. They are typically authoritative people who insist on being in charge and don't want their authority challenged. It is seen as disrespect and an affront to their expertise if someone questions them. To be fair, some people really are experts at what they do, and they might say that they're too busy to explain themselves, but are they? No one is so great that they shouldn't have to explain things to people who don't understand. There will come a day when they are unable to continue the work that they do, and they will need to pass the torch to the next generation. If they've not explained anything, who will take over for them?

Some of these people who don't want you questioning them can be highly manipulative individuals. Some will use threats to silence people who question them. Others will have a personal meltdown if anybody dares to question them. There are a lot of controlling people out there who demand unquestioning obedience and blind faith about everything that they say. This behavior is in no way normal, nor is it healthy. If somebody can't handle it when you ask them questions for clarification, they may be an abuser. Find out if you are a victim of abuse here: Are You Abused? | The Signs You May Be

Why We Believe What We Are Told

Why We Believe What We Are Told

So, if it's problematic to automatically believe what people tell us, why do we even do it? We do it for a lot of different reasons. First off, it saves time. If we personally investigate every last thing that we are told, we will never get anything done. Secondly, it gives us comfort to believe that there are experts who can be sources of information. Everybody needs to be taught things, no matter who they are. Once you believe you found someone who educates and teaches you, you may not bother to question them.

We fail to question things and just automatically believe what we're told for another ugly reason sometimes though. We have been trained to. From the time we're small, we are trained to respect authority and not question them. If someone presents as an authority figure, even if we're suspicious of them, we may automatically feel uncomfortable questioning them, especially if everyone else is following them blindly. Truthfully, it can be difficult to stand out, even if it seems like the right thing to do. We are praised for unquestioning belief and obedience and criticized or called difficult for questioning things. One Zodiac sign that doesn't care if you get upset with them for questioning things is Sagittarius and you can read about them here: Sagittarius | Traits Star Sign in the Spotlight

Why to Question What You’re Told

Some people question everything. They run it through their personal filter to see if it sounds true or not, and if it doesn't, they speak up. There are multiple reasons to question things. It helps with your own critical thinking skills and it helps to prevent you from having your mind controlled. It helps you to learn the truth about the way things are, and sometimes it's a huge help to other people when you question what you're told.

For Critical Thinking Skills

Being able to think for yourself is extremely important. Even if you consult an expert on a regular basis, someday that expert is going to be wrong. Everybody is wrong sometimes. It's also going to help you to become one of those so-called experts. Checking something with your own personal objectivity, especially if it sounds far-fetched, helps to keep your mind engaged. The human mind is a very powerful thing, but it's your decision whether you use it well or not. So, exercise your brain by thinking and finding out things instead of automatically believing what you're told.

To Avoid Being Controlled

Some people want to have complete control over everybody else. Demanding blind faith is one way they do that. Never give someone complete control over your mind. They have a mind of their own and they get to decide what they believe, don't let them decide what you believe too. Why let somebody else control your mind when you could control it and what you believe yourself? It's just one way to take back control of your life and your own personal power. To Learn the Truth

If you want to know the way that things are, question things. Sometimes people tell you exactly how things are, and sometimes they don't. If you want to stay informed, educated, and have accurate information, you're going to have to investigate things on your own. You do that by questioning what you're told. Some people don't want you to know the way that things are because if you do you will do things that they don't like. Sometimes people mean well, but they gave you the wrong information anyways. If you're finding out for yourself, you won't have to worry about things like that.

To Help Others

There are times when pretty much everyone is thinking the same thing- that what they're being told sounds ridiculous. It can be extremely difficult for one person to speak up and question what they're being told. You might need to be that person. If you can have the courage to be the one who speaks up, that's going to help everyone else. It might not seem fair to have to be the brave one, but consider something- we don't know why other people don't have the courage to speak up. They might be abuse victims terrified of being attacked for voicing a concern. They may have limited emotional resources currently.

There is another reason why people don't speak up. They don’t know how. Everybody has a different personality, and some people's personalities make them afraid to stand out. Those are going to be the people least likely to speak up. People who are abuse survivors might be so brainwashed that they don't have the strength or the skills to speak up. Some people genuinely don't know that anybody needs to speak up. If you're the one who questions things, you can help all those other people. Helping others can give your life meaning. How to Question Things

Questioning things doesn't have to be difficult. It's actually quite simple. The first thing you need to do is give yourself permission to question things and don't let guilt stop you. If you're talking to somebody, ask them things respectfully and they may be more willing to discuss things with you. Even if they're not, don't let them shut you up, because you deserve to know the truth. Finally, do your own research so that you know exactly what the answers are.

Don’t feel Guilty

Guilt holds us back from things that we need to be doing. Questioning what you're told is not something to feel bad about. People who tell you not to question things are the ones who should feel bad. The only guilt you should feel as if you fail to question things, because you would let yourself down. You owe it to yourself to get the whole truth about things. So, no matter how guilty somebody tries to make you feel for questioning them, do it anyway.

Speak Respectfully

Speak Respectfully

The tone you take, the language you use, your gestures and body language, and the general way that you question people sets a tone of respect or disrespect. Even if you feel like someone is deliberately giving you the wrong information, taking a disrespectful tone in how you ask them questions will make them shut down instead of communicating with you. Always give people the respect that you want, and they will appreciate it.

Refuse to Be Silenced

Beyond refusing to feel guilty, don't let anybody shut you up when you're questioning things. The truth is out there and you deserve to find it. Anybody who would try to hold it back from you is someone who you should be suspicious of and question even more than you thought you should. So keep asking, even if people don't want you to.

Do Your Own Research

It is crucial that you don't just take people's word for things, but do your own research. If you ask an expert a question and they say they got the information from a particular source, consult that source and plenty of other ones too. Some people allow their biases to answer questions for them, and if all you're looking for is information, you won't have a bias. Check things out no matter what anybody says and you'll get the answers.

When To Believe without Question

The only time that it's a good idea to believe without questioning is when your gut tells you it's okay. Your psychic abilities will alert you whether something is accurate or not. Trust your psychic abilities and they will never fail you. When you know a source to be accurate time after time unfailingly, you can probably believe it. Then again, that's really not blind faith, because you have proof of accuracy.

Blind faith has been praised by people for generations, but it really shouldn't be. Nobody deserves that kind of control over you, and anybody who tries to get it doesn't have your best interests at heart. Always question what you're told, especially if it doesn't sound accurate. We are trained from the time we're children not to question things, and if you have embraced that habit, it's time to break it. Don't give anyone control over your own mind but you. Never follow anyone blindly, and you won't have to worry about getting lost.
