What is Failure?

Failure is defined as being unable to succeed in something that you wanted to. Everybody fails at some point. Maybe you failed a test in school, but you never failed anything else. Maybe you failed to secure a spot on the team that you wanted to be on. Maybe you failed to get a job for the last six months and you're sick of being unemployed. Maybe you failed at something small, like baking a cake using a new recipe.
The chances of failing are high. The more things you try, the higher the likelihood of failure. Some people believe that only weak, stupid, or somehow ill-equipped people fail. However, pretty much everybody fails at some point in time. It just means you didn’t meet some desired expectation or goal. It doesn’t mean you have failed at life, it just means you failed at one thing. Perception matters when you fail. Why Are We Afraid to Fail?
We are afraid to fail for multiple reasons. Some people are afraid to fail because they don’t want people to think they are inferior. Other people are afraid of failure because they are perfectionists and would view themselves negatively if they failed at something. Other people have an actual clinical diagnosis of failure phobia called atychiphobia and that drives them to become terrified at the very thought of failure. Basically, no matter who we are, we are afraid to fail because we think failing at something will create problems for us- problems we don’t want.
Fear of failure is nothing new and it’s not unusual. Soocial shared some surprising statistics about the fear of failure. In America, about 31% of adults reported fear of failure and almost half of American adults say that fear keeps them from achieving goals. 46% of Britons say fear of failure keeps them from trying new hobbies and 56.01% of adults in Belarus won’t even start a new business if they see a good opportunity to because they are scared of failure. In the Nations of Japan, Korea, and Canada over half of students say failure makes them afraid they don’t have enough talent. How is Failure Bad?
Although failure can be a very good thing, not everything about it is beneficial. It creates crippling self-doubt and can hold us back. It can make our goals seem completely unattainable, and that can make us want to quit.
It Creates Self-Doubt
Let's face it, things can be very difficult to achieve. That’s why it's important to believe that we have what it takes if we want to. Failing even one time can make us doubt our ability to achieve anything at all. Any time you have failed and it makes you afraid to try. If you’re afraid to try to achieve something, simply look at yourself in the mirror, and say, “ Just because I failed once doesn't mean I will fail at everything for the rest of my life. I don't know how much I can accomplish, but I'm going to try my best and find out.” Repeat this positive affirmation to yourself whenever you have self-doubts.
It Holds Us Back
If we've failed and it makes us afraid to fail again, it can hold us back from trying. We can become so disheartened from past failures that we believe it's not worth our time to risk failing again. You might look at other people's achievements and think that they have all the things that you don't- all of the abilities, all the talents, and all the strength. However, a lot of the time, the only thing that people who achieve things have that people who don't achieve things lack is the desire to try, no matter how worried they are that they might fail. Never try to hold a determined Scorpio back. Read more about that sign here: Scorpio Traits | Star Sign in the Spotlight
It Makes Things Seem Impossible
If you've been working very hard on something, especially over a long period of time, and you still have not accomplished it, it might make you believe that you just can't do it. Every time you have a failure, even a small one, it might make your goal seem even more unattainable. Remember, Rome was not built in a day. Sometimes you just have to be patient, keep trying, and have faith that things will work out and you can achieve what you want to.
It Makes Us Want to Quit
Failure can be so disheartening, it makes you wonder why you ever bothered to try. Quitting can seem like a very attractive option. If you've ever failed at something, it can make you want to quit before you even get started on something else to save you the disappointment and embarrassment of failing yet again. If you feel like you're failing miserably at something that you've been working on for a while, It can make you want to just give up and do nothing at all. Sometimes you do have to quit. Some Famous Failures
Some of the world's most successful people had early failures before they had their groundbreaking successes. The world changing American President Abraham Lincoln failed many times before he succeeded. World renowned cartoonist and writer Charles Schultz failed miserably, too. Believe it or not, phenomenal woman Maya Angelo even had her own failures.
Abraham Lincoln
It was said that Abraham Lincoln’s father was opposed to him getting very much formal education, so he was only able to go to school for about a year. Despite that, he was dedicated to education and listened to lectures, read, and attended debates. He managed to get a law license although he went into debt as an adult and everything he owned was seized because of it. He was defeated in politics multiple times before he was elected to the presidency. He became the president who was responsible for abolishing slavery.
Charles Schultz
Beloved cartoonist and writer Charles Schultz had his own struggles as well. His high school yearbook staff rejected all of the cartoons that he submitted, and he failed 8th grade. He was also said to be really terrible at sports. As an adult, he submitted his work to multiple publishing organizations and he was rejected multiple times. In 1950, United Feature Syndicate accepted his ideas, and he became one of the most beloved cartoonists and storytellers of his time.
Maya Angelo

Writer, educator, actress, and civil rights activist Maya Angelo became one of the most respected women of her time. Even she was not without struggles and failures. Trauma from her childhood rendered her mute for a time, but she found solace in her writing. She would go on to receive over 50 honorary degrees, Tony and Grammy Awards, and even the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She once said “ There is no failure as long as you learn from your experience, continue to work, and continue to press on for success.”
How is Failure Good?
Even though failure can cause terrible problems for us, it can cause great things. It helps us to learn, and can reaffirm our resolve and commitment to our goals. It teaches us problem solving and how to be flexible and it shows us what really matters.
It Helps Us Learn
If you continue to fail on your path, failure will show you what is not working. It will also teach you about how you deal with failure. Do you fall apart, take it as a challenge that refreshes you, or reach out to other people for help? You learn who helps you when you reach out during times of failure, and you learn how nasty some other people can be when they think they're superior. Those are the people that will have a more difficult time when they, themselves fail.
It Reaffirms Our Resolve
Your personal determination to succeed will come to your rescue when you've had some form of failure. It will remind you of why you're trying so hard to begin with, what you seek to accomplish, and specifically what you're looking forward to. Failure can inspire you to work harder, or perhaps just continue what you're already doing. It shows you how tough you can be when things become difficult and how much stronger you are than things that oppose you. Some people throughout history have been determined to discover the fountain of youth, but it’s right in front of you. Find out where it is here: Finding the Fount of Youth
It Teaches Problem Solving
When something isn't working, it's time to try something else. The ability to problem solve, come up with creative new ways to do things, and pull together a team when you need help are imperative to long term success in life. If everything always went according to plan, nobody would have to learn to come up with different strategies, think outside the box, or try different approaches. When failure happens, it can bring out these skills you didn't even know that you had.
It Shows What Matters

If you are failing at a job that sucks all of the life out of you, and your family is missing out on quality time with you, you are being taught that the job is not important, but your family is. If failing to make a team you've tried out for makes you work all the harder on your skills, it shows that improving yourself is most important. Pay attention to what's most important when you fail. For some people, the only thing that matters is love. Find out how to choose love here: The Case for Always Choosing Love
How to Embrace Failure
Plenty of people want to avoid failure, or pretend that it never happened, but it should be embraced. Embracing failure shows faith in yourself, the gracious ability to accept that not everything goes the way that we expect it to, and demonstrates that we understand that one failure doesn't ruin our whole life. A few steps to embracing failure include accepting that life, situations, and we are imperfect. Go ahead and ask for help during failure when you need it. Learn lessons from failure, and decide what you're going to do in response to it.
Accept Imperfections
Human beings are not built to succeed every time. We are also not built to fail every time. We are imperfect beings doing the best we can every day. Sometimes we're going to make mistakes, be overly confident, or be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Imperfections as human beings are inevitable, even if you've done everything right. Being in the wrong situation can create a failure that's not your fault, but it creates a failure anyways, and it could happen to anyone.
Ask For Help
Sometimes, we need help to achieve a goal. Who do you know that has the resources, expertise, or time to help you with that? It can be humbling to admit that you can't accomplish everything all on your own, but what have you got to lose? If you know someone who can help you turn a failure into a success, reach out and ask! One way to get help is to ask for constructive criticism. Find out more here: The Fine Art of Being a Constructive Critic
Take a Lesson
What didn’t work? Do something else. Failure can teach you a lot about not only what isn’t working, but about yourself. How do you handle failure? Do you crumble, and feel destroyed, or do you dig your heels in, and try harder? What kind of things will you take away from this situation going forward that can help you in new scenarios? Sometimes failures happen because there's something we didn't know, and the failure will teach us everything we need to know so that we can succeed.
Make a Decision
Failure will bring you to the final point of making a decision. Is it time to quit and move forward with something else, or try again? Sometimes failures are wake up calls that we have been unrealistic or have been doing the wrong thing. Other times they test how dedicated we are. So what will it be? Only you can decide what's going to be best. You might decide to embrace fear instead of running from it. Find out why fear can be good here: Why Fears Are Good Sometimes
Failure scares us more than most things, but it really shouldn’t. Failing at something can help us learn about situations and ourselves and it can help us to know what really matters. Embrace failure by accepting that we all fail sometimes and decide whether to keep trying or do something else. Even the most successful people fail sometimes, so don’t be afraid of failure. Use it to climb to even greater success.
