A Guide to the Chinese Zodiac

What you may not know is that the Chinese zodiac is about much more than just which animal is yours, and you will be pleasantly surprised by the amazing story of how the twelve animals were chosen.

Some would cite a mundane history, but others know that myths contain truth, and according to them, the Chinese Zodiac animals were chosen in a marvelous way.

Chinese Horoscopes and the Jade Emperor

A long time ago, a wise ruler was so just that he ascended to immortality, and became known as the Jade Emperor. Although he didn’t create the world, he was the one, who decided to form human beings out of clay.

Sometime after that, he had ruled the heavens and Earth successfully for many hundreds of thousands of years, and he realized he had not had the time to visit Earth and see the animals.

He invited all the animals to come and visit him. Each of the animals were so excited to meet the Emperor, they all wanted to be the first to get there! The first twelve animals to arrive impressed him so much, he honored them by naming the Zodiac signs after them in the order in which they arrived.

How the Chinese Zodiac Works

Unlike the Greco-Roman Zodiac, which is arranged by months, and based on the stars, the Chinese Zodiac is arranged in a twelve-year cycle. This cycle is based on the moon and, as the Jade Emperor decreed, each year is represented by one of the animals who first arrived to see him.

For example, the years 1963, 1975, 1987, and 1999 are called the Year of the Rabbit, and the whole year falls under the influence of the Rabbit’s energy. Each sign will fare differently in these years.

Using this system, the year you are born, and the animal attributed to it will influence your life, career path, and your good and bad fortune. Naming, marriage, what career path to pursue, and many other important decisions will be based on what is considered best, and this is based on your Chinese Zodiac sign.

Some individuals will even carefully select which year to have a baby, because they want to select certain characteristics for their children. This assures success for the child and their family in general.

A rise in birthrates during the Year of the Dragon are common, because Dragons embody success and power. It is said that people who follow the Chinese Zodiac are not only the Chinese, but people from other parts of Asia including Japan, Korea, Cambodia, and Vietnam.

Listed below, in the order they arrived to see the Jade Emperor, are the twelve Chinese horoscope animals. We’ve included some of the years they rule, some personality traits you will embody if you are born under this animal’s influence, and which signs each horoscope is most and least compatible with.
