What is Self-Motivation?

What is Self-Motivation

“The best motivation is self-motivation.”- Jim Rohn

Don't you hate it when you're working your hardest on something, and somebody else is trying to micromanage you, push you, and basically tell you how to do what you're already doing? Chances are you know how to self-motivate. Self-motivation means setting goals, working towards them, and achieving them without other people telling you to do so. People who self- motivate are personally driven to achieve and they don't need to be prompted by other people. They typically have the ability to keep working hard even if there are obstacles, and their personal commitment to their goals makes them want to accomplish things.

On the other hand, people who don't self motivate might not care about accomplishing the task at hand. Someone will have to remind them to complete their tasks, complete them in a timely fashion, and do them well. People who don't self motivate don't know how to encourage themselves or keep themselves moving forward when things get difficult. They might say they don't have the time, but do any of us really have time? They might say they don't have the expertise or the resources to achieve, but even the most successful people had to learn how to excel at what they were doing before they could do it. They might say that they're discouraged because they've not achieved what they're trying to yet, but usually that just means they've not tried long enough.

Self-motivation is one thing that makes high achievers stand out from people who don't achieve much. Everybody needs encouragement. Everybody needs mentors. Everybody needs to believe there is a reason for everything that they work hard at. The people who self-motivate are the ones who can find resources for all of these things and really care about what they're doing. A lot of people who self-motivate will go out of their way to encourage other people who can't self-motivate. They might find themselves in the roles of teachers, guides, and trainers. If you're lucky, they will teach you how to self-motivate too. Capricorns are great at self-motivating and you can read about them here: Capricorn Traits | Star Sign in The Spotlight

Why Don’t Some People Self-Motivate?

“Amateurs sit and wait for motivation, the rest of us just get up and go to work.”- Stephen King

There are different reasons why some people don't self-motivate. One of the biggest reasons is self-doubt. An easy way to get over self doubt is to set small goals, and each time you accomplish them, it will help to build your self-esteem. Burnout can also make people not self-motivated. Stress, exhaustion, and disappointment that comes from burnout makes some people wonder why they should even bother to try. Lack of appreciation on the job can make some people not care about self-motivating, and they will do the minimum required just to get through the work for the day so they can leave and have some peace.

Some people are comfortable where they are, and don't feel the need to push themselves farther. They might talk about wanting to progress, but won't bother until they feel like what they have isn't good enough anymore. If you're not specific about your goals, or haven't seen people succeed at what you're interested in working toward, you might not self-motivate because you might not understand how important what you're interested in doing is. How Self-Motivating Helps

How Self-Motivating Helps

“Push yourself because no one else is going to do it for you.”- Anonymous

Sometimes you'll get lucky. You will have the best supervisors, teachers, mentors, and support group that you could ever wish for. Unfortunately, there will be times when you won’t. You might be left all by yourself to do things that you could do better if you had help. You might have all the help you need, but no one to give you the push you need to excel. Sometimes it's nobody's fault and the people who are supposed to be mentoring, supporting, or teaching might have their hands full and need you to step up. If you have the ability to self motivate, you can do that.

Nobody knows you better than you do. You know better than anybody else what drives you, excites you, helps you, and is important to you. You also know better than anyone else what makes you feel discouraged, exhausted, or makes you want to give up. You have to be your own best supporter, especially when there's nobody else there to do it. You have to also give yourself great constructive criticism. Ten Tips For Self-Motivating

“ Stop wishing, start doing.”- Anonymous

Some people naturally self-motivate. Chances are if you've read this far down in the article, you might not know how. Don't worry. Below are ten simple tips to help you get started at self-motivating, excel at it, and do it so well that there is a strong chance you may never need motivation from anyone else ever again. Read on to find out what they are.

Set Goals You Excel At

The first thing we do anytime we start something new is set a goal. The key to success is to set the right goal. Set goals to do things that you know that you can achieve. Even if you're setting a goal to accomplish something you've not done before, if you excel as a learner, it's a good goal. If you set a goal to achieve something that you are poorly suited to, you are setting yourself up for failure. Don't do that to yourself. Set goals of things that you are good at, to the point of being excellent at it, and you are on the path of success for self-motivating.

Keep a Schedule

If you don't work on things, you can't achieve them. That's why it's very important to set some type of a schedule to work towards your goals, and stick to it. If you want to write your first book, and you decide to sit down for an hour a day after you get off work, establish that habit and don't let anything keep you from it. You will find that when you set habits at a scheduled time that support your goal, you will get used to them, and it will help you to stay motivated. Your schedule may become like a sanctuary, giving a safe space for inspiration. Read about creating safe spaces here: Sanctuaries - How to Create Safe Spaces

Allow for Setbacks

One of the most difficult things about being self motivated is to stay motivated when there are setbacks. They might highly discourage you, make you wonder why you bothered to try to begin with, and make you think about quitting. Everybody goes through that. Don't let it make you feel bad or make you worry that you don't have what it takes to accomplish things. Setbacks can be because you still have more to learn, but they can also be just because of problems that come up. Be patient with them, work through any obstacles that the setbacks put in your way, and keep trying.

Take Baby Steps

If you try too hard to do everything all at once, and are impatient for results. You might feel demotivated very quickly. Break everything down into steps. If it still seems like too much, break things down into smaller steps. Every step that you take is one step closer to success. Make sure not to overwhelm yourself by expecting too much too soon. This will help you to stay motivated no matter how long it takes to accomplish things. It helps if you’re realistic about expectations. Reach Out for Support

Reach Out for Support

Being self-motivated doesn't necessarily mean that you're all alone. Make sure to reach out for whatever support you need along the way. You might need some more training or education. You might need some people to help you with work that you can't do all on your own. You might just need a little bit of encouragement when you're getting used to becoming self-motivated. Who do you know who has shown you most of all how good they are at self-motivating? Don't hesitate to reach out and ask them for advice. One day, someone will need your help when they're trying to self-motivate. So, let someone help you now.

Give Yourself Breaks

If you exhaust yourself, you will quickly become demotivated. When you're enthusiastic about a new project that you're motivating yourself to tackle, that enthusiasm might drive you to work too hard. Remember that you have to balance work with rest. If you overwork yourself, you might get sick of working on things. You don't want that. So, make sure to give yourself a break so that you don't get burned out. One Zodiac sign that is notorious for burning themselves out because they don't want to take breaks is Virgo and you can read about them here: Virgo Traits | Star Sign in The Spotlight

Discard the Unnecessary

To self motivate and succeed at what you're doing, you're going to need to focus. What things are cluttering up your life, and holding you back from progress? Those things need to go. When you're studying for your bar exam, picking up an extra area of study is unnecessary. Do that after you pass your exam. More than tasks, what kind of mindsets are unnecessary and hold you back? Were you raised by people who stigmatized the concept of failure? Don't burden yourself with such outdated viewpoints. Discard habits, goals, beliefs, and attitudes that do not serve you. It will help keep you motivated.

Practice Self-Care

There is never a time when you should not practice self-care, but anytime you are seeking to self-motivate, self-care is even more important. What health practices will support your physical, mental, and emotional well-being? What kind of boundaries do you need to set while you're working on things? What gives you peace of mind when you struggle with these goals, and who always makes you feel better when you need a little encouragement? Self-care will be one thing that helps you to stay motivated. Read ten self-care tips here: Follow Our 10 Steps For Spiritual Self-Care

Push Your Boundaries

We have boundaries for a reason, but you won't know what your boundaries are unless you push them. When you are seeking to self motivate, you're trying to achieve something. There is a very strong chance that you are holding yourself back from accomplishing more because you don't know that you can do it. If you're self-motivating to run a half marathon, how much farther can you run today than you did yesterday? Try it and find out. If you are self motivating to bake like your grandma, don't underestimate yourself. Try that difficult recipe she excelled at that you've never tried before. Push past your boundaries and grow. That's what you’re built to do.

Celebrate Small Victories

Some people won't be happy until they achieve their final goal. Don't do that to yourself. If your goal is to run ten miles, reward yourself after the first smile, and every other mile that you run. If you are self-motivating to run ten miles faster than you did before, celebrate every minute less than it takes you to accomplish it. Every little step that you take that brings you closer to your goal is another step in the right direction, so reward yourself for all of them.

When To Step Away

“Every one of the 200+ dead bodies on Mt. Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe calm down.”- Anonymous

We have all had jobs, hobbies, or even volunteer positions where we were the most self-motivated person on the team, and we weren’t appreciated. Many of us have also worked very hard to accomplish things that just weren't working out. Times like this call for you to stop trying so hard. When you are a highly self-motivated person, admitting that things are not going well for one reason or another might make you feel like you're giving up and admitting defeat, but don't look at it that way. Look at it another way- you were brave enough to try something, and now the universe has shown you that it's time to redirect your energy to something that is more well suited for you!

Self-motivation is how we keep ourselves moving forward when there is nobody there to encourage us. Some easy ways to self-motivate include setting goals for things that you're already good at, taking baby steps to get to the finish line, and practicing self-care. Even if you've not been good at self-motivating before, you can learn to be. So, what are you waiting for? Get out there and get started. Nobody can motivate you better than you can.
