What is Making a Difference?

What is Making a Difference?

“ Not all of us can do great things, but all of us can do small things with great love.”- Mother Theresa

In life, everything we do creates a change. There is a reaction to every action. Making a difference means taking charge of that and creating good things with the things that we do and say. It means doing small things and great things with the intention of making better things happen. Making a difference starts when we realize that each person who we come into contact with matters. It happens when we uplift people when they're in their darkest moments, and sometimes that means being understanding when they are at their worst.

When you are at your lowest, the last thing on your mind will be helping someone else sometimes. You can still give a smile to a stranger who's having a bad day and it makes a bigger difference than you could ever know. Giving one word of support makes a huge difference to someone who feels ignored. Remembering someone's name after just meeting them once can really make their day. Staying late, coming in early, or just keeping an unkind opinion to yourself can make a difference that you're completely unaware of. Being nice makes a bigger difference than you know. People who work in medical, the military, or fields like teaching aren't the only ones who make a difference. You can make a difference no matter what you do. If you are a student an entry level cashier, a refuse collector, a delivery person, or a dishwasher, things that you say and do make a big difference in the lives of everyday people. Your neighbor who gets few visitors who you stop and say hello to everyday is helped by you more than you will ever know. The stranger who you hold a door for after they just got dumped really appreciates that little gesture. The server who was just screamed at who you have a kind word for benefits from what you did more than you will ever understand. All of these things make a difference.

Why Bother?

“You may find that making a difference for others makes the biggest difference in you.”- Brian Williams

There are nasty people everywhere, and you might have just encountered one before you started reading this. There are strangers who you will never see again, who might forget what you say and do. There are people who screw you over who you might think don't deserve a kind word. Small things that you do might make a very tiny impact, but it matters. It takes extra time to think about the impact we make and let's face it, we're all busy. Not everyone appreciates the things that you do to try and make a difference. Considering all these things, why should we even bother to make a difference in the world that we live in today?

We choose to because we can. We can choose to not care and become like those nasty, thoughtless people who hurt us, or, we can choose a different path. We can choose to be one of the good hearted people who intentionally try to do good things. If one out of every fifteen kind intentions turn out to be even a moment of goodness, that makes it worth it. We should choose to make a difference because without the good things we do, there would not be as much love, joy, hospitality, or as many miracles in the world. Being consciously aware will help you make a difference. Learn all about how here: Live in the Moment- Be Consciously Here

How We Make a Difference

“ You can only make a difference by being different.”- Rick Warren

There are four easy ways that we make a difference and it all starts with our choices. What we choose to say, do, where we are, and what energy we emit makes a difference in everything.

What We Say

What We Say

Our words communicate things. People react to our words. We can use our words to create good, or we can use our words to hurt. We can use our words to promote ourselves and other people, or we can use our words to repel people. What we say has a lasting impact. People might forget exactly the words that we say, but they will remember how we made them feel with our words. Words may have more powers than actions because words communicate everything. Learn about the magical power of words here: Magical Words: The Amazing Power of Words

What We Do

Our actions make a difference. When you rescue a homeless animal, you make a difference in its life. When you ignore that homeless animal, you make a difference because you leave it there to suffer. When you break a promise to a friend that you could easily keep, you make a difference and you break the trust in your relationship. When you choose to keep that promise, you build trust in your relationship and you strengthen your friendship. When you share your lunch with someone who forgot theirs, they don't go hungry. Small things and big things make a difference.

Where We Are

Showing up for your best friend who's going through a breakup will make a big difference in their healing. Hanging out with other friends because you think it sounds more fun will mean that they have to suffer alone. Showing up for your team and doing our part every time shows dedication and strengthens the team. Co-parenting with your ex and doing your share as a parent not only helps your ex, but it reminds your kids that you love them and you're there for them no matter what. Showing up for your family can be instrumental for any healing they need. Read about psychic healing for families here: Psychic Protection for Family Problems

With Our Energy

Some people are natural energy readers. With their psychic abilities, they can sense your intentions, attitude, and who we are. Other people feel it in more mundane ways. Our energy is obvious in the tones of voice we use. It's obvious in how much enthusiasm we bring into a project. Our energy can be detected by our facial expressions and by the kindness or unkindness of our words. It shows in our personalities and it shows when we either work on our bad habits or brag about them. Energy is the intention behind everything that we do or don't do and the way that we do it.

Ways to Make a Difference

“ Sometimes it’s the little things that make a big difference in someone’s life.”- L. Penelope

Some people think that making a positive difference has to be difficult or take a long time, but it's something we can do very simply every minute of every day. Being mindful about small things like how we lead by example or who needs our mentoring so we take them under our wing are easy ways that you can make a positive difference. Read on for simple ways that you can make a positive difference every day.

Be Your Best Self

“That’s just the way I am” is something a lot of people say that lets people know they don’t want to work on themselves. One thing we can do instead is work on being the best version of ourselves that we can be. Unlearning bad habits and learning good ones in their place, or admitting when we've made a mistake or two simple ways we can be our best selves. Some people believe that the world owes it to us to deal with us when we're at our worst, but why should we be our worst selves when we could be our best selves? One way to do that is to defeat personal weaknesses. Read how here: Identifying Each Personal Weakness and Beating It

Take Someone Under Your Wing

Take Someone Under Your Wing

No matter who you are, there is something that you are very good at. There is someone somewhere on earth right now who wishes that they knew how. When you meet someone who expresses that, one way that you can make a difference is to teach them. Some people don't really need to be taught anything, but they need to be protected or uplifted. Befriending someone new at your school will make a big difference in their life when they're making new friends. Inviting a recently divorced neighbor to go out with you and your friends will make a big difference in their healing. Take someone under your wing today and watch them soar.

Listen

A lot of people underestimate the value of listening. Sometimes people just need someone to listen to them while they express how much they're hurting. All of us need someone to listen sometimes. Some of the most important times to listen are when you are having a disagreement or when you don't understand something or someone. If you listen, soon, you might understand. The number one person who it makes a difference to when you listen is yourself. You gain wisdom and information the more you listen and the less you talk. It makes a big difference if you can listen to yourself, and not lose yourself in relationships. Find out how here: How to Stop Losing Yourself in a Relationship

Reach Out

If you haven't heard from your friend in a while, reach out to say hello. Chances are they've been going through a difficult time and it will make a big difference if they hear from someone who cares about them. Be the first to reach out to new people so they don't feel so alone. You might make a new friend. Don't be afraid to be the first one to reach out after you've had a fight with someone who you love. Our good relationships are always more important than feeling like we're right. Reaching out first opens communications and bridges the gap between our hearts.

Be Understanding

Sometimes it's hard to understand things or people who are different from us. If you can find it in your heart to be the person to do that, it will make a very big difference. If you have what it takes to see the humanity in someone who isn't just like you, you will build relationships and make people feel loved and accepted. If you don't understand someone, sometimes all you have to do is ask and they will be happy to explain to you. There are as many different types of people in the world as there are people. Sometimes love is all you need to understand. Choosing love helps us to be more understanding. Read more here: The Case for Always Choosing Love

Read Between the Lines

One way to make a difference is to pay attention to small details that other people might miss. A lot of people fall into the habit of believing everything that they're told, or engaging in what is called all or nothing thinking, but things are rarely that extreme. If your coworker came in with a bad attitude, isn't getting anything turned in this week, and is just unbearable to be in the room with, they're probably having a difficult time. If you are the only one who picks up on that, you may be able to have a conversation with them, have them feel better, and make a major difference because you will help them to get back into the swing of things.

Lead By Example

Instead of telling people what to do, or giving orders, why not lead by example and show everyone how it's done? When you are tasked with being a leader, do you sit and tell people to do the work for you, or do you roll up your sleeves and join your team? Being a member of the team, as a leader will make other people want to pitch in and make them feel very good about you leading them. Being a self-starter is a great way to lead by example. Find out how here: How to Accomplish Anything by Self-Motivating

Be Peaceful

One of the simplest, and perhaps least difficult ways to make the biggest impact is to be peaceful. When people try to instigate you to fight, don't react. When people say harsh words to you, don't respond in kind. When people try to draw you into fights that they have with others, refuse. Choosing peace keeps things from escalating and getting worse, and can make horrible things stop before they even happen.

Every day, all of us have opportunities to make a big difference. What we say, do, where we are, and what our energy is creates change. You can choose to create positive change by being peaceful, taking people under your wing, and listening when people need you to. One word or action or just your presence results in wonderful life changing things. Be that magic!
