Will There Be an Apocalypse? How It All Ends

The thought of the world as we know it disappearing is terrifying, and a lot of people believe it’s coming. Find out what different people have to say about an Apocalypse and what might come afterwards if the world ends.

Since the beginning, it seems people have shared fears, and horror stories about how the world might end. For some, it was the collapse of their personal civilization, but for others, it was wide-eyed observations about how the whole planet could go silent. Religions, and scientific communities alike believe this end of life, or Apocalypse could happen someday. Join Mysticsense to explore some common beliefs and theories about an Apocalypse, and what could happen. Find out why the idea scares us, and when or if there will ever be one. All of us will die someday, but will all life on earth perish at once? Read on to find out.

What is the Apocalypse?

What is the Apocalypse?

The concept of the Apocalypse, or the final end of the world we know began during Judaism, and was carried over into Islam and Christianity. Those people aren’t the only ones who believe there will be a single catastrophic moment, or series of events that bring it about. It seems most people throughout history from Hindus to Navajos have believed in end times, and spoken of it in hushed tones of horror. The Apocalypse is basically a prophecy about how things will end on earth, and multiple signs and omens are given in myths and scriptures to alert people it is beginning. If the world is going to end, maybe we should learn to live each moment meaningfully. Learn how here: Live in the Moment- Be Consciously Here

Noticeable theories were that 2012 would be the end of the world, but 2012 came and went, and the earth still existed. The year 2000 was supposed to create a collapse of the world’s technology, but it didn’t. Various Christian mystics have foretold an exact day the end was supposed to come- and it hasn’t. For example, Hilary, Bishop of Poitiers declared that in 365 CE, the world would end. Part of his proof of that was that a deceased emperor was supposed to be an Antichrist who was said to appear in end times. Two years later, Hilary’s demise was sealed with his death- not the end of the world.

Between 1346 and 1351, various Europeans said the Bubonic Plague portended the Apocalypse, maybe because it killed approximately half the population of Europe. Somehow, despite all those deaths, life continued. Christopher Columbus, known for voyaging to the Americas and beginning its colonization by Europe, predicted end times in the year 1656 in a book he published in 1501. He did not live to see the fact the world continued. Cult leaders Jim Jones and Charles Manson both predicted the world would end in the 1960’s. For Jones, his life ended in a mass suicide he orchestrated, and Manson died in prison in 2017- yet the world continued. Are you in a cult? Find out here: What Are the Warning Signs of Cults?

Apocalypse Theories

The fear of the world ending has led many people throughout history to suggest how they believe it could happen. In more modern times, beliefs that nuclear warfare could wipe out life on earth dominate. Ancient Aztecs, Norse Pagans, and early and modern Christians had their own theories. However, science talks about how they believe the sun will bring about the end of life on earth.

Nuclear Obliteration

There is a belief that nuclear warfare can wipe out the world in something called a Nuclear Holocaust. It is also called Assured Mutual Destruction. The bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, ending WWII were just the beginning. Civilization has sprung up again from those cities, but they were devistated at the time. Some people believe that large nations who have nuclear weapons could use these to destroy the entire planet and wipe out life as we know it. Some scientists believe many humans and animals could survive the immediate effects of the blasts, but things like long term climate change from the blasts could lead to the earth’s inability to support life. Ragnarok

Ragnarok is from an ancient Norse belief in the end of the world, but there is a catch- some believers can’t say whether it has already happened and we are living in the world that comes next, or if it is to come. Also known as The Twilight of the Gods, or the death of gods like Odin, Thor, and Heimdall, it all begins when a mighty horn called the Gjallarhorn is blown by Heimdall. Then an epic battle will rage between the Aesir gods, and the Frost Giants. Ancient warriors used to dedicate enemy warriors killed in battle to Odin, so their souls could join his army to fight the Giants. It is foretold the Giants will win, the gods perish, and a new world begins after the only two people to survive the event, Lif and Lifthrasir, emerge. The Aztec Worlds

To the Aztecs, the world had been created and destroyed four times by ancient gods. It was believed this world is the aftermath of those worlds, and humans were created, and destroyed by the gods in each of those worlds. Today’s humanity was believed to be the reanimated bones of the people who lived in the fourth world, and we were resurrected by the god, Quetzalcoatl. The Aztecs believed human sacrifices had to be given to feed the sun, or it would go dark, and the world would be rocked by earthquakes and cease to exist. Another terrifying thing was foretold to happen as well. The Tzitzimimeh, skeletal celestial spirits , will descend on humanity and devour us if they can’t start a fire in the chest cavity of a sacrificial victim at the end of a 52 year cycle. The Biblical Apocalypse

The New Testament of some versions of the Bible hold a book called Book of Revelations, which was penned between 81 and 96 CE, and is attributed to John, an apostle of Jesus when he was exiled on Patmos to escape persecution from the Emperor Domitian. In this book is vivid imagery of end times, how the sky will roll up like a scroll, the sea will fill with blood, and an epic battle between celestial forces of good and evil will be waged on earth and the skies. During this time, it is believed human beings will be caught in the war, and will be vulnerable to the forces of darkness. During this time, whatever humans are alive will be subject to temptation to prove their worth to the Christian god, and those who prove themselves worthy can go to a new world in heaven for eternity. Those who fail to pass the testing will be cursed to languish in punishment forever with the celestial forces of evil. Read about working with angels here: A Complete Guide to Working With Angels

Pollution

Pollution

Some people believe the burning of fossil fuels, creation of toxic forever chemicals, and constant generation of trash that will not biodegrade for a very long time is basically poisoning the earth. Burning fossil fuels has been shown to change the temperature of the earth, something called global warming, and is said to completely shift the natural climate and weather patterns worldwide. Some say the pollution humans create, if allowed to continue, could make parts of the planet completely uninhabitable by the end of this century. Other people say this is a conspiracy theory we have no evidence of. Can we save the earth? Find out here: Environmentalism: How to Save the Earth

The Sun Swallows Earth

Science today believes the earth to be over 4.54 billion give or take 50 million years. Science today also says it’s because of something we need- the sun. It provides us heat and light, and this makes things grow, it helps regulate necessary water, and it creates the proper temperatures for habitation. The sun is estimated to grow stronger, and hotter over time, and it will heat the earth to the point where it is inhabitable. The sun transforms its own hydrogen to helium and regulates its temperature and stability. Eventually, its hydrogen will run out and this will make its core compress and the sun will brighten and swell, eventually to hundreds of times the size it is. The heat will boil and burn off all water on earth, and by a few billion years from now, it will completely suck the earth into it and engulf our planet. Don’t worry though- the earth will have been uninhabitable by then and nothing will live here to experience the horror. When is the Apocalypse?

Some people thought they knew- but the day they believed would end the world came and went- and the world continued. Each year it seems there is some conspiracy theory of the world ending, and yet the sun rises again. The Christian scriptures say nobody knows when end times will happen. No timeframe is given by the Aztecs for when the sun burns out, but it is when humans fail to fulfill their obligation to feed the sun. No date for Ragnarok is given, but when the mighty horn is sounded by Heimdall, it begins. We could certainly see throngs of Frost Giants hacking at the gods. For each of us, in our own way, our world will end when we pass away. Other people’s worlds will change in life shattering ways, so they feel like their life is over before they pick up the pieces of their hearts and start again. When a period of your life ends, and another you aren’t as happy about starts, you might feel like your world ended. Somehow, when bad things happen, life continues on earth, and has for a very long time. Perhaps this apocalypse will happen during your lifetime, and perhaps not. We will all have to wait and see. Why The Apocalypse Scares Us

Why the Apocalypse Scares Us

It is impossible to live forever, and we know this, so why are people terrified of the thought that someday the world, as we know it, will come to an end? Because we love our friends and family. We know that we are not the first people to ever live, and we won’t be the last to live. We know that when we die, other people and animals will still be living. The thought that the miracle of life continues after we die is comforting. We are also programmed to embrace life and avoid death, which enhances our ability to survive through difficult times. Read about dealing with difficult people here: How to Deal with Difficult People

Besides this, some end times theories point to bloody, chaotic, terrible things that will end everything. Some theories point to war, or the scarcity of things we need to live, including clean air to breathe, water to drink, and food to eat. The thought the sun will swallow the planet after heating up so much nothing can survive sounds painful. The thought that some deity may test people and condemn them to eternal damnation is frightening as well. War between the forces of good and evil with human beings stuck in the crossfire is equally scary. There is comfort in some theories that a new world will come about, but will we survive it, and how traumatized will we be?

Nobody wants to live during end times to witness the horrors they bring, and nobody wants to be killed during them. Some people also don’t like NOT thinking about them, though. The belief that knowing details will help us be prepared, know how to behave, and cushion the suffering a bit in the event of such a catastrophic event is comforting. Being aware eases anxiety and gives people something to focus on just in case we are alive when the end begins. What about the end of a friendship? Will an Apocalypse Happen?

So, these theories may be terrifying, but are they going to definitely happen someday? Religious people believe very strongly what their scriptures say, and would never dare question them. Believers in science are confident the environmental predictions it gives are 100% fact, and should be believed. Some say Ragnarok has already happened and we are the descendants of the only human survivors of it. There is no rock solid evidence the world and the earth as we know it will cease to exist- but some people believe it will. Some people’s world almost ended when they had a near death experience. You can read more here: What is a Near Death Experience Like?

Cultures and civilizations have risen and fallen throughout history, so those worlds have passed into nothingness. Yet new societies have risen, and the world continues to evolve. For better or for worse, humanity creates permanent changes on the planet and while some say we are destroying the planet, others insist we will develop technologies to offset whatever damage we do. Are religions and science correct that there will be one catastrophe or a series of catastrophic events that end life on earth entirely? Maybe life will end on this planet if the sun truly engulfs the earth, but it will be many years away, and we will all be gone by then. Perhaps, as the myth of Ragnarok states, a new world will rise. Maybe it already has.
