What’s a Deity?

A deity is a supernatural being who is sacred and is worshipped. They have some kind of authority or power or something in the world. They can be male or female and they are typically immortal, although some gods or goddesses and mythology have been known to die. Some people say that gods and goddesses are the personifications of natural scientific phenomena and people ascribed independent life to these things, trying to explain the way that the universe was. Other people say that they are living beings who revealed themselves to mankind, and that's how we came to know them.
There are countless religions in existence today, and there have been even more throughout history. Religions today seem to agree on one thing about deities, even if they don't agree which deities are the ones to worship. They agree that deities intervene in the lives of human beings and build relationships with them. They agree that some deities have created the world, and others have created human beings themselves, some of whom created humans in their images. Some people's deities hold an afterlife where the faithful can join them forever, and others just aid human beings in their day-to-day workings. How Many Deities Are There?
It depends on who you ask as to how many gods and goddesses there are. Monotheists believe that there is only one god or goddess. Judaism, Islam, and Christianity are three examples of this. Some religions believe in up to thousands of gods and goddesses like Hinduism. They practice what's called polytheism. Besides Hinduism, other polytheistic faiths include Norse Heathenry, Wicca, and some forms of Buddhism. In the monotheistic faiths, their god or goddess is the deity overseeing everything, whereas in polytheism, there are different gods and goddesses who oversee certain things. For example, in Norse Heathenry, the Freyja is the goddess of love, lust, sex, and is a warrior goddess. Njordr, on the other hand, is a god who has power over winds , can calm fires, and is known as a god of the sea and the riches, like fish, it holds.
There are other people in modern times who don't think of gods and goddesses only in terms of the ones that they serve, but think of the existence of multiple gods and goddesses, countless ones, even, and they believe that all people's deities are valid and exist. Such people may be the ones that come to read an article like this one. They believe that it's possible for any one of us to worship any god or goddess. Such people may explore the mythology of multiple religions, attend multiple different worship services, and attempt to communicate with many different gods and goddesses from many different religions. Does Everyone Have a Deity?
Whether or not everyone has their own deity is another question that's up for speculation. Ask any atheist whether gods or goddesses exist and they will say they don't. For them, there is no deity to worship. For many monotheists, especially Christians, the belief that their god is for all people is dominant. A lot of today's new age spirituality practitioners and Neo Pagans believe that each individual has a main goddess or god who they belong to, in other words, a matron or patron deity. Some people believe that if you don't establish a relationship with your deity, your life will not be complete. Other people believe that it's optional and you'll be fine either way. How Deities Communicate
Gods and goddesses don't communicate the way that human beings do, because they don't have human bodies to communicate with. They visit us in different ways. They can speak to us when somebody invokes them into their body. They have also been known to visit prolifically in dreams and visions or through psychic messages. Symbols throughout the world can alert us of their presence or what they want from us. They also visit us through animals.
Invocation
Gods or spirits can be called upon in prayer to speak through human beings. Some people allow the spirit of a goddess or a god to come into their bodies and they surrender their bodies to the goddess or god to use at will. In many different Wiccan traditions, The High Mother Goddess is called into the body of the High Priestess during certain rituals so that she can bless and speak to human beings. In different Christian ceremonies, people will ask their god, or their Holy Spirit to come into them. In some Voodoo ceremonies, certain spirits known as Loa, have been known to ride or take possession of human beings by stepping spiritually into the body to help people.
Dreams and Visions
Meditation can put you in a mental state to allow the voices and will of your god or goddess to come through. One worshipper was doing a guided meditation through a Celtic goddess, and a Norse goddess came and told her “ You don't belong here, come with me.” While you are sleeping at night, goddesses and gods can visit you in dreams. In the book of 1 Kings, Jehovah appeared to Solomon in a dream asking what he wanted. Solomon asked for wisdom, which was granted to him. Your own visions and dreams of gods and goddesses might be more vivid or more subtle. Pay attention to the messages and dreams and visions, because a divine being might be speaking to you. Psychic Messages
Gods and goddesses may communicate with you when you are fully conscious and aware of everything that's going on. You don't necessarily have to be in a trance state for meditation or be sleeping for them to reach out through messages. If you've been asking for guidance about something, they may give you a feeling about something, or you can get a psychic version of something. One way they communicate is giving you warnings about things that are not safe and that they want you to stay away from somewhere. They may guide you somewhere with a message that they want you to see or hear. They may send a psychic impression about a book that you see out in public. Pick the book up and read it. It might be a message from your goddess or god. Read about the mother goddess here: Embracing Divine Feminine Spirituality
Symbols
At some point, devotees of goddesses and gods come up with symbols to represent them. Three triangles put together and something called the Valunut is one thing that represents the God Odin. The six pointed Star of David represents Jehovah, the god of Judaism. The crucifix represents Jesus, the god of Christianity. These symbols aren't the only thing that represent them though. Light, including a single candle flame also represents Jesus, who was called the Light of the World. Soll Invictus, an ancient world solar deity, is represented by the sun itself. Wolves, ravens, and the battlefield itself represents the god Odin. When a deity's symbols appear before you, sometimes it's them making their presence known.
Animal Visits
Other symbols of the goddesses and the gods are certain animals. Some religions believe that their god created all animals on earth, so they are all representations of that creator. For people who believe in the stories from the Old Testament of the Bible, including Noah's Ark, a white dove represents their God. White doves flying past you could be a symbol that your god wants you to be a peacemaker at a conflict that you're involved in. Cats represent the goddess Freya, and cats appearing before you could be her, letting you know that she's near. Read about Oya, a goddess of transformation, here: Oya, Goddess of Transformation
Finding Your Deity
If you are one of the people who believes in the validity and existence of all goddesses and gods, but you have not discovered who you believe your personal deity is, there are simple ways to do that. Deities welcome new relationships, and won't hide once you open yourself. A firm knowledge of different forms of mythology and which things you identify with are helpful. For example, if the ancient Celtic pantheon of Ireland has always appealed to you, perhaps that is a god or a goddess that you belong to reaching out, so study up on each of those gods or goddesses while you're seeking which deity you belong to. Other things you can do is pray, give offerings, and make visits to holy sites. Then all there is love to do is pay attention, because they will answer.
Pray
Prayer just means communication with a supernatural being. You can do that verbally or just in your mind. Some people prefer to say pre written prayers, while others would rather speak from the heart. Some people say prayers in a sanctuary space, while others pray wherever they are. A very simple prayer to ask your god or goddess to speak to you is “ I know you hear me and have held me in your heart from birth. Reveal yourself to me. I open my mind, heart, and full awareness to you. Speak, so I may know who you are by name, by energy, and so I may begin walking my path with you. So Be It.” Read about goddesses and gods of war here: Who is the Goddess and God of War?
Give Offerings
It's not 100% necessary to give gifts when you're trying to establish an initial communication with your personal goddess or god, but it can't hurt. Each of them have specific ascribed offerings that they prefer, but they will notice you making an effort before you know what their preferences are. Good things to offer are libations of milk, honey, or wine poured into the earth. You can also burn incense as an offering. Lighting candles, or having a fire in their honor gets their attention, but one thing that all gods and goddesses appreciate are good deeds.
Feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, giving rides to people who can't take themselves places, or donating your time or skills to helping animals in need is smiled upon by divine beings. Churches, Mosques, Temples, Groves, or other organizations of religious people do fundraisers, clothing drives, and volunteer their time throughout the year for the glory of their god or goddess. Any kindness that you do can be dedicated to your goddess or god, even if you don't know what their name is yet.
Visit
Sacred places are good places to meet a god or goddess. One of the most sacred places that you can visit is simply nature. Walking through the forest, by waters, hiking mountains or hills, or even tending to your own garden as a sacred space representative of creators. When you visit the silence of nature, the sounds of the city and modern electronics and technology are quiet, and it's easier for you to listen to the natural world. Some people say they have had their strongest impressions of the divine in nature. Other people say that they have heard the voice of the divine more when they listen to their inner selves. Pay Attention
The number one thing that you need to do when you are trying to establish communication with your goddess or god is to just pay attention. Once you have said your prayer that they reveal themselves, have faith that they will. Watch for symbols, listen for psychic impressions, pay attention to nature, and just stay in the mindset that you're ready to walk with them. They will answer and reveal themselves.
Your personal deity has probably been dropping you hints for a long time- you just did not realize it. Through animals, symbols, or words, they reach out. They may have visited in dreams, or they may have been walking hand in hand with you through the years. When you decide that it's time to establish a relationship with them, they will hear your call. Some people are afraid that it will be very difficult for them to find their deity, but it won't.
Establishing a relationship with them happens after you discover who they are. Once you know their name, research through ancient scriptures and lore is one way to get to know them, but that's not the only way. Listening to them in silent meditation as time goes by is yet another way to get to know them, and allowing them to send you messages without expectations is yet another. If you truly belong to a goddess or a god, they will not ignore you, they will not forget you, and they will never let you be alone.
