What’s a Near Death Experience?
A near death experience is a life changing experience that comes after death and pending death which shows you things about your life, truths you may be unaware of, and the afterlife. Some people say that near death experiences are not real, and your mind is just occupying itself during trauma. Other people believe that near death experiences happen because you were so close to death you are beginning the process of passing over to the other side, whatever you believe that is. The only thing is, you don't. You live. So, why people who live experience these things is a complete mystery.
If you believe that spirits and higher powers surround us, you may believe that you're being watched over during especially dangerous times. As for the people who don't believe that near death experiences are real at all, there is no other way to explain the fact that most everybody who has a near death experience describes the same things. It is estimated that about 10 to 20% of people who survived cardiac arrest have reported having a near death experience, and that about 10 to 17% of people in general have had a near death experience. Other researchers say that one in 20 people have had near death experiences. What Happens During a Near Death Experience
In a near death experience, you die or almost die. Your spiritual and mental awareness picks up on certain things however. You understand that you're leaving your body, and you experience a complete sense of serenity where fear and pain completely go away. People say that their life flashed before their eyes and then they went through a dark tunnel toward a source of light. A lot of people meet ancestors and loved ones who have passed away before them.
You Leave Your Body
During a near death experience, people get a real feeling that their spirit leaves their body. Some people say that they step out of their body and can see it lying broken in death. Some people see groups of medical professionals trying to help them, and some people even say they know the moment that they are revived. If they have suffered an injury, sometimes they feel sorry for their body. It's almost like watching these things happen to somebody else, but they know that that's their body that they're watching. Another way to leave your body is during astral projection and you can read all about that here: Beginning Your Own Astral Journeys
Pain and Fear Disappear
People report during an out of body experience a wonderful sense of calm and serenity comes over them, and all pain and fear that they would have felt will go away. Even though they know that they are dead, or near death, somehow it's not frightening. While we're alive, typically, we fear death and do everything we can to avoid it. However, as many people who have had near death experiences can tell us, it's not as scary as we think it's going to be. Fear isn’t always bad. Find out why here: Why Fears Are Good Sometimes
You Remember Your Life
Another thing that happens during a near death experience is you remember things that have happened during your life. Some people say their entire life flashes before their eyes during a near death experience. Other people say things that are happening in their current life flash before their eyes. They might tell themselves they have too much left to do and they don't want to die yet. They might worry about their families who they would leave behind if they die. They might regret not telling someone that they love them if they're about to die. One thing is certain though. Most people who have near death experiences remember parts of their life if not all of it during their experience. The memory is a powerful thing. Darkness Then Light
One thing that people report during near death experiences is walking through some kind of a dark realm toward a source of light. Some people say they get a sense that that light is some kind of a universal higher power that they're being pulled toward. Other people say that they feel an individual being or beings of light reaching out to them. They can't see exactly what they're going toward, but they get a very strong feeling that the light source that they're moving toward is a very good thing. They move through the dark section before they come to the light. In our own dark, or shadow side, we find hidden parts of ourselves. You See Ancestors
Another thing that happens, according to a lot of people who have shared their near death experiences, is that they once again meet people who they love who have died before them. Parents, grandparents, siblings, friends, and people who they dearly loved seemed to be waiting to greet them on the other side. This belief is so strong that when some people lose a loved one, they say, “We will meet again.” It makes sense that the people who took care of you and spent their life with you would be waiting for you there doesn't it? What Science Says
Science is not 100% certain what causes near death experiences. Religious people say that near death experiences our proof of the afterlife and a higher power. Some scientists are not so certain. One theory is the dying brain theory. This states that as the brain begins to die, a series of hallucinogenic images start firing throughout the mind. Some people believe that this accounts for near death experiences. Other people say that it's lack of oxygen to the brain that causes the brain to create images of things that don't exist. The sensation of traveling through a dark tunnel to get to a source of light for example, is seen as a form of hallucinogenic tunnel vision and a misunderstanding of events that the brain produces while it's dying.
Some scientists believe that the brain releases hormones and chemicals and creates a different type of fight or flight response as the body is near death or is actively dying. They say that this accounts for feelings of things like peace and lack of pain. Some people believe that our bodies naturally go through something called depersonalization, making us feel a detachment from the body as we're dying. None of this explains the fact that some people say they could actually see their bodies from across the room during near death experiences, spoke with loved ones who passed away before them, or felt the presence of spirits. Things You Learn During a NDE
One of the top things that people say they learned during a near death experience is what's truly important. The small things that we stress about like bills, what strangers think of us, or getting cut off in traffic by people really don't matter in the grand scheme of things. When your life flashes before your eyes during a near death experience, who do you think about? Do you think about the annoying coworker and the next cubicle over, or do you think about your pets who will have no one to take care of them if you die? Do you think about the ex who cheated on you ten years ago, or do you think about the person who you love and are dating now? Read about unconditional love here: Unconditional Love Meaning
When you think about the events of your life, what comes to mind? Do you wish that you had spent more time at work, or do you wish that you had spent more time with your friends? Do you wish that you had won more arguments whether you have said more kind words to people? When you have a near death experience you learn what is important, who is important, and you get a chance to come back and try again. You might even contemplate the meaning of life. What Now?
If you have had a near death experience recently, you might wonder what comes next in your life? That's up to you. There is no way to know when our time to pass on will come. We never know how much time we have left. So ask yourself the following questions:
1) Are there any conversations or falling outs with the people who I love that I regret? What can I do to mend bridges, heal past hurts, and repair any broken relationships?
2) Are there any dreams that I have had in my life that I have never lived? What is it going to take to make those dreams come true, and how can I get started?
3) Is there anything that I can do to take better care of my health than I have in the past? Is there any unnecessary stress that I can get rid of? Are there toxic relationships that I need to get out of my life? Do I need to eat healthier, exercise more, get more sleep, or be more mindful of my limitations and boundaries?
4) Are there things that I need to say that haven't been said yet? Do I need to learn to stand my ground, ask for the respect that I deserve, or in any other way speak up? How can I start doing that today?
5) Is there anyone who I love that doesn't know it? Tomorrow is not promised. Today might be all I have. How can I reach out to them and tell them all the love that I feel in my heart for them before it's too late?
6) Relationships aside, what financial and material things do I need to take care of? Have I been putting off sale or repair of a property that would be a burden on my family that I could take care of now? What things do I own and never use that I could get rid of so other people would not have to do that in the event that I do die? Is there anything that I have always wanted to buy or own that I can acquire for myself now?
7) What do I want to do with the rest of my life, and how can I start doing it now?
Near death experiences are those profound moments that we experience when we are about to die or we have died. Signs that you've had a near death experience include your life flashing before your eyes, believing that you see your body but you are no longer attached to it, and being in the presence of people who you love who have died. Some scientists say near death experiences are not proof of an afterlife, but just natural things that the brain does as it's dying. Science can't prove that near death experiences aren't real, especially to people who have had them.
During your near death experience, all fear of death may have left you, but what if it didn't? Any of us could die at any time, and eventually all of us will die. For now, you are back in the realm of the living although you have walked through the land of death. Enjoy every moment that you are alive, sharing it with the people who you love. Think about what you want to do with the rest of your life, and then go do it. If you've had a near death experience, but have returned, you are very much alive and with us today. Welcome back.
