What is the Fountain of Youth?

What is the Fountain of Youth

The Fountain of Youth is a fabled source of water that holds water that heals the body and in some accounts, it is said it restores youth if it’s bathed in or drunk. Explorers have sought this mythical water source for thousands of years, and today’s people journey to a mysterious well that dates back generations to drink waters of healing. From the Macrobian Fountain of Herodotus to St Brigid’s Well in Kildare, if the stories are true, there are at least five wells of restorative waters that rejuvenate youth and health.

The Macrobian Fountain

Herodotus, a 5th century Greek historian wrote of a people known as the Macrobians who were said to live long- all because of waters. They lived up to 120 years or longer! This water was said to smell of violets, and the people bathed in it and their skin would gleam like it was well oiled. They said the water was “weak” and nothing would float in it, but would sink straight to the bottom. These people were believed to live in the Horn of Africa and were said to be tall and handsome. Some historians say the Macrobians may have been ancient Ethiopians. Read about the spiritual significance of water here: Significance of Water in Astrology & Dreams

The Pool of Bethesda

In the Book of John in the New Testament of the Bible, the Pool of Bethesda in Jerusalem was written about. People who had all forms of illnesses would lie there, waiting for it to be stirred, meaning it was ready to heal. In the story, Jesus saw one man lying there who had been waiting to be healed by the pool for 38 years. The man told Jesus he had nobody to help him get to the pool in time, so Jesus healed the man himself. There are multiple pools in the Muslim quarter of Jerusalem that have been identified in modern times, some of which were known as healing pools, which could very well be the Pool of Bethesda. The Elixir of Life

Multiple elixirs believed to grant immortality have been written about throughout history. In the Epic of Gilgamesh, the hero of the story, Gilgamesh himself, sought the elixir, but had it stolen away after he found it. Multiple rulers of ancient China sought the elixir with throngs of followers- none of whom could find it. A Japanese folk tale tells of an elixir of life a moon god gives to a man, but the man rests for a short time while he is carrying the water back. It becomes contaminated and does not work. It seems these elixirs of life people search for are always just out of reach! Some expressed doubts such elixirs existed. Doubt isn’t always bad though, and you can find out why here: Why Having Doubts is Good Sometimes

Bimini

Juan Ponce De Leon heard stories of a magical place with healing waters called Bimini from the indigenous people of the Yucatan, and went to find it. The stories reached the Spanish before De Leon voyaged there, and he, too, never found it- although he did find Florida, and today, a plaque marks the spot of a freshwater well. It was written that the Spanish searched high and low all over Florida, but could find no healing fountains, or wells. Maybe they found no healing wells, but you can use healing crystals. St. Brigid’s Well, Kildare

Throughout the green isle of Ireland are over 3,000 holy wells. At least 15 are named for St. Brigid. She was was a Catholic abbess named after a pre-Christian goddess, Brigid. A holy well believed to be filled with healing waters is open to the public in Kildare, Ireland today. Kildare was a site she established an abbey for her nuns, but prior to Christianization, the site was holy to the pagan devotees of ancient Celtic goddesses and gods. Standing stones, and multiple ancient neolithic sites from ritual structures attest to this. Exactly what holy significance the area held before St. Brigid’s time, we don’t know. What we do know is countless pilgrims flock to the Well in Kildare for holy water believed to heal illness. Tradition dictates the water should be drank after visiting the well. Why We Love Youth

Some people look back on their youth nostalgically, and remember wonderful things they experienced then. In youth, there are typically less pains, illnesses, and physical limitations, so people get to experience more good things when they are younger. As younger people, especially as children, financial responsibility and the stressors that come with those things are typically not present. A lot of people feel more energetic when they are younger and there seem to be limitless opportunities when we are young. The younger you are, the less bad things you will have witnessed and lived through, and you will typically feel more hopeful for the future.

Some people report a renewed sense of happiness as they grow older, however. People who live through bad times and survive and thrive beyond them will look forward to their later years, feeling the worst times are behind them. With age comes wisdom, and we often gain that wisdom by learning from mistakes. Although some people dislike how our bodies change as we age, because the gray hair and wrinkles we develop look unattractive to some people, other people embrace aging and nurture their bodies as they age. No matter what age you are, you can cultivate body positivity and you can read about how to do that here: Learning Self-Confidence by Loving Your Body

Is Age Just a Number?

Is Age Just a Number

Yes and no. The reality is, both our genetics and our lifestyle choices decide how we age. A lifestyle of unhealthy food, low exercise levels, and high stress will make your body age faster than usual. Note- stress- is a major problem. You can eat right, and be a champion athlete, but age rapidly due to high levels of stress. Although genetics play a role in how we age, the habits we learn within our families can age us most dramatically. Continuing the generational curse of substance abuse learned in a family can age, and kill you quickly, for example. Stress can literally kill us- although some are lucky and lived through it. Can We Rejuvenate Ourselves?

Science says the body regenerates itself down at a cellular level. Although the body cannot completely repair itself at all times, it replaces itself in some ways. Every 120 days our red blood cells rejuvenate themselves and every 4 weeks our outer layer of skin does. Every 10 years, our bones rejuvenate themselves and our liver creates all new cells between every 150 to 500 days. Parts of the body like the central nervous system and the heart are not built to regenerate themselves that well, however, so the body can’t completely rebuild itself. There are things that help with regeneration, though. Abstaining from unhealthy things like drinking too much alcohol and adding things like exercise help the regenerative parts of the body to activate themselves. You can rejuvenate yourself with your chakras too. Find out how here: Use Blue Chakras for Self Healing and Meditation

Create Your Own Magical Fount of Youth

Since it looks like a mythical elixir of life or fountain of youth doesn’t actually exist, what can we do to restore our health, preserve youth, and regenerate our bodies? There are actually five simple things we can do to help ourselves, believe it or not. We are what we eat, so eat and drink well for optimal rejuvenation. Exercise, and move your body to stay active. Include positivity in your life with positive thinking and being surrounded by love. Finally, find a sense of purpose that gives your life meaning.

Eat and Drink Well

Eat and Drink Well

The easiest way to rejuvenate your body is by controlling what you eat and drink. The things that we put into our body are transformed into what moves through our bloodstream. This is carried to every organ and system in the body. So the food and drink that we ingest will either heal us or poison us. If you want to rejuvenate your body, find out what your body needs. Make sure not to eat anything that you have allergic reactions to, and make sure not to eat anything that stresses any system of your body. Excessive sodium, sugar, fat, or lack of protein and proper nutrients will move you closer to death, but the right amount of all of the things that your body needs will help you to live longer and feel better. Move

Inactivity will age you and move you closer to death. Every muscle, ligament, and joint in your body needs a certain amount of motion and activity to be healthy. Stiff joints make you feel sore and tired. Getting the proper amount of activity combined with the proper amount of rest will help to rejuvenate your body. Especially for people who work at desk jobs, it's important to get up and move around. Some experts recommend that every 30 minutes to an hour you should get up and walk around. Don't let your job or your lifestyle make you sedentary. Get up, and move your body. If you don't especially like exercise, find something fun that you like to do like dancing, walking your dog, or ice skating in the winter. One great form of body movement is trance dancing. Learn about getting into trance here: The Beginner’s Guide to Getting into Trances

Think Positively

Positive thinking will give you a can-do attitude and make you feel hopeful. The more hopeful you feel, the more alive you will feel. Negative thinking stops you in your tracks and holds you back from all the wonderful things that you could accomplish in life. Even if you are someone who is a natural at identifying problems, if you only identify the problems but not solutions, you will be thinking negatively instead of positively. Life isn't all rainbows and roses, but it's also not all storms and dead flowers. So look on the positive side to rejuvenate your attitude and mind, and it will help you to retain your vitality. Positive affirmations are a great way to use the power of positive thinking. Read more here: The Power Of Positive Affirmations

Be Surrounded by Love

It's no secret that having love in your life makes everything better. Even when you go through the most difficult times, when you have friends, family, or a partner next to you, they will make it easier to deal with the difficulties. They will make it worth it to get up and keep trying no matter how hard things may seem. There are some people who love you unconditionally, and those are the people who you should have in your life. Read about unconditional love here: Unconditional Love Meaning

Find Your Purpose

A sense of purpose will give you a reason to get up, go out, and do things. Without it, life may lose its flavor, and the days will drag by. If you have things to look forward to, you will be excited about the days, and everything will feel wonderful. What kind of things that you can include in your life give you a sense of accomplishment, happiness, and give you things to look forward to? You should be including those things in your life. So, even if it's something crazy like mountain climbing, or learning a new hobby when you're middle-aged, do what makes life worth living and gives you a sense of purpose. Finding meaning in your life can give you a sense of purpose. Read about the meaning of life here: What is the Meaning of Life

For thousands of years, brave explorers have sought a fountain of youth that could restore life, health, and some even sought immortality. Unfortunately, no such source of water exists. Even though there is no true fountain of youth, you can rejuvenate your body on your own. Build your body from the inside out with good healthy things to eat and drink and get up and move, exercising every day. Fill your mind with positive thinking and your heart with positive relationships filled with love. Perhaps most importantly, fill your life with the things that give you purpose. We might not be immortal because of a fountain of youth, but we can build our bodies and our lives and ways that recharge us, give us purpose, and make us feel alive.
