What is Witchcraft?

What is Witchcraft?

“Witchcraft is a deep love of nature and the ability to see magic in places where most others do not.”- Anonymous

Witchcraft is the practice of magic. Magic is moving energy to bring about a physical change. Spells, making talismans for protection, prayers, chanting and meditation to alter your mind, moon rituals harnessing the power of the moon in its phases to get results, giving gifts to the gods to ask for their help are all magical practices. Simple things like affirmations, candle magic, and wearing certain colors or crystals to use their attributes are also magic. The most effective magic is done to transform yourself instead of seeking to control other people. A lot of people wonder, are male and female witches different? No, a witch is a witch.

Witchcraft should be used to supplement the work you do on the mundane level, and to move energy. It’s to encourage yourself to roll up your sleeves and get to work. If you want a job, simply reciting words or burning candles can help send an alert to the universe you are job hunting. It doesn’t replace updating your resume, job hunting, applying for jobs, and going on interviews. Magic is something human beings use everyday, and it is so ingrained into being human, we may not even realize we are working magic. What is a Witch?

“ The world has called me by many names: wizard, druid, sorcerer, mage, warlock, magician, pagan, shaman, cunning man. But they do not see the truth, the essence of who I am- A man beneath the moon, robed in magic, A practitioner of the old ways. I am a witch.” – Silver Apple Society

A witch is someone who uses witchcraft. Because witchcraft can be something as simple as making a wish or sending out a special prayer, everybody can do it- but witches are extra special magical people. They instinctively know how to listen to nature. They understand when animals speak. They have abilities that manifest without them trying. They know what people need emotionally, and they know the importance of establishing their own sacred spaces, even if they belong to a group or religion that has a sanctuary.

Witches have been accused of atrocities throughout history. The word witch was used extensively during the Medieval Inquisition era in parts of Europe to denote someone who drew malevolent power from a devil to cause harm. In more modern times, a lot of people still believe human beings are capable of things the Inquisition said they were. They believe witches can fly on broomsticks, shapeshift into animals, curse on innocent people, make men fall in love with evil women, and unfairly influence people to do their bidding. There is no scientific evidence that human beings are capable of any of these things. Learn about the witchcraft hunt in Salem here: The History Of The Salem Witch Hunt

How Can I Become a Witch?

How Can I Become a Witch?

“ Witches don’t look like anything. Witches are. Witches do.”- Franny Billingsley

Nobody becomes a witch. Witches are born. Each of us are born with natural psychic and magical abilities we either learn to use, or ignore. Witches are different. They are especially powerful workers of magic. Instead of becoming a witch, you begin to realize you are one. You might be around other magical people and feel more of a kinship with them than you do people who don’t practice magic. You might begin slowly waking up to your abilities. You might see a book, be drawn to a magic shop, or just detect that you are different from some people because you gravitate toward magic.

The author started awakening to her abilities as a teenager, but had no knowledge that witches were real, and not simply creatures from fairy tales. She first started having prophetic dreams, and was drawn to spending alone time in the forest. By her early 20’s, she learned witches exist, and learned about Tarot cards, crystals, candle magic, oils, and incense. She learned about polytheism, natural healing, and started circling with other magical people. At age 29, she officially started walking her magical path. The natural world suddenly made sense to her, and she finally felt at home spiritually. She awakened to the fact she was born a witch. If you’re a witch, so will you. One type of witchcraft is Wicca. Am I a Witch?

“The day I decided that my life was magical, there was suddenly magic all around me.”- Marabeth Quin

So, now that we have discussed what witches do, and some of the scientifically impossible things that superstitious people fear witches can do, how do you know if you are a witch? Every witch shares a few traits. Nature speaks to witches, and they are drawn to the practice of magic. They are old souls, often remembering things from past lives, and they appreciate unusual things other people shun or fear. The number one way you can tell you are a witch is if you feel like one.

Nature Speaks to You

Can you feel the seasons changing? Can you sense when something bad is about to happen because of the way the wind sounds? Do the phases of the moon speak to you? Are you able to speak the language of animals, understanding their feelings when few others can? Can you sense when the earth or her creatures are hurting? Do you think of the earth as a living organism as opposed to some rock hurtling through space? Do your energy levels change with the seasons, affecting you more than the people in your family? Chances are, if you are this sensitive to nature, you’re a witch. One of the most natural types of magic you can use is self-care. Read how here: Magical Care for Self in Stressful Times

You’re Drawn to Magic

Some people never think of spells, or the tools and supplies used in making magic. Do you? Have you always felt a fascination with the crystals that glitter in the windows of witchcraft stores? Do the symbols on Tarot cards speak to you? Are you drawn to runes, ogham staves, or pendulums? Are you sensitive to the effects of essential oils, incense, or candles? Do different colors heavily influence your mood? Do certain clothes or jewelry influence how you feel beyond how you look? Chances are you are extra sensitive about these things because you naturally understand their magical significance. An extra significant sign of being a witch is when people’s energy is very noticeable to you and you either feel horrified or healed by different people’s energy. Magic is best used if your magical working tools are blessed. Learn how to bless them yourself here: Blessing Your Magical Tool for Sacred Ritual

You’re an Old Soul

Are you wise beyond your years? Were you always the most mature one in your friend’s group growing up? Did people your age come to you for good advice, especially about things somebody as young as you had not experienced yet? Do you automatically take protective responsibility for not only the people you love, but people or animals in crisis you can help? Did you reach a high level of maturity early in life when other people your age were still out making stupid mistakes, doing things you somehow knew better than to do? You’re not boring, you have evolved spiritually over many lives. Speaking of, do you remember past lives? Find out about them here: The Meaning of Reincarnation

You Appreciate Unusual Things

Each witch is different, but they all share the common trait of being unafraid, and downright drawn to the unusual. Some have a love of reptiles but belong to a family that fears them. Some are unafraid of death, and speak to the dead. Some love to collect odds and ends they find in nature like unique stones, twigs with unique shapes, or broken things nobody else appreciates but them. You appreciate unusual things because your magical abilities allow you to see beneath what the mainstream teaches you to. You think for yourself, see beauty in what some say is ugly, and question what others tell you, exploring life for yourself. You Feel Like a Witch

You Feel Like a Witch

The number one sign you’re a witch is that you feel like you’re one. Witches typically feel at one with all of creation. They even feel a unity with people who are different from them. They often feel strong kinship with members of other animal species, especially their own spirit animals. They can sense deeply the connection that all life has. They can especially sense the connection they have with their own magical powers. They can sense a connection with other magical people, and they may feel an immediate bond with them the first time they're in their presence.

They feel naturally drawn to the things that enhance their personal powers. Green witches are naturally drawn to gardening. Witches who do healing will be naturally drawn to things like cooking with foods that heal or Reiki. Witches with especially strong psychic powers will feel called to use those powers to help other people. Witches who are called to do spiritual and emotional counseling will automatically know how to stop what they're doing and listen when somebody needs them. Telling yourself you have accepted that you are a witch is a powerful way to affirm what you are. Learn the amazing magical power of words here: Magical Words: The Amazing Power of Words

As a witch, you may begin to develop abilities that nobody around you has. Things might start happening to you that you've never heard of. For example, you might be able to sense the presence of ghosts, but you've never known anyone who could do that. You might feel like you have more in common with animals, especially your spirit animals, than you do with other people. You may develop the ability to tell when it's a bad idea to go somewhere or do something, and get evidence sometime later that you were right.

It is very important when you begin to develop these abilities to investigate them instead of fearing them. Fear of your personal powers is a mistake that as a witch you don't want to make, but it's a very common mistake for people who have newly awakened to their abilities. Your abilities as a witch are not abnormal, evil, or something that you've been given to create harm with. They are just a part of who you are and how you were born. Face your abilities and never run from them. Your nature as a witch is calling you.

How to Practice Witchcraft

“The first time I called myself a witch was the most magical moment of my life.” – Margot Adler

The practice of witchcraft begins with the decision to just do it. Each witch starts their journey in a different way. The easiest way to start is by visiting witchcraft, psychic, New Age, or metaphysical shops, and buy supplies. A lot of the shops have classes, and those who don’t can help refer new witchcraft practitioners to more experienced witches. The online world has countless resources, and even mainstream book stores carry magical books. There is not one place to begin. You begin by moving toward what you are drawn to. So, check out the library book you got a good feeling about. Talk to the “oddball” neighbor who is always growing their own herbs and making their own teas, salves, and candles.

Each witch gets a call to awaken, and each call is different. Heeding the call to start walking your magical path is the way to practice witchcraft and hone your skills. Remember that while all witches share similar traits because all witches have powerful magical abilities, nobody can tell you the best way to be a witch. You can have teachers, but ultimately, your goal is to listen to your inner witch, do what comes naturally to you, and thrive as yourself. Just make sure to be patient with the process. You won’t wake up your most powerful one day and never need to learn anything. A magical path is a lifelong journey that will evolve and grow once you start walking it. Deciding the ethics of magic is a good way to start practicing magic and you can learn how here: What Is Black Magic and Spell Ethics?

If you think you are a witch, you probably are. Signs you are a witch include being especially sensitive to nature, appreciating things most people fear, and feeling called to magic. You don’t become a witch, you are born one. When you realize you’re a witch, face who you are and start walking your magical path. It’s calling.
