How long have people had pets? It's believed that cats were domesticated around 10,000 years ago to help with vermin control. Dogs may have been domesticated up to 30,000 years ago from a now extinct variety of wolf. They say some friendly wolves may have approached people for food and people welcomed that because having these wolves around helped warn them about danger. Throughout the centuries, people have kept plenty of different kinds of animals as pets like fish, reptiles, birds, rodents. People even keep insects as pets.
