Blessing Your Magical Tools for Sacred Rituals

Magic, for some people is just a useful craft, but for others, it is very sacred. Find out easy ways to bless your own personal altar and all your magical working tools.

Your magical working altar and sacred tools are just as holy as those used in a mosque, temple, or any house of worship. Chances are, though, you will have to bless them yourself. Some people just naturally know how to do things like that, but other people need a little help. Don’t worry, you can join us at Mysticsense to find out how to bless your own magical tools and altar. Find out some simple magical blessings anybody can do, but first, find out how to set up your own altar and choose your own tools- your way. Everybody has their own sacred power that lies within. While every religion or tradition teaches the basics, only you can decide what works best for you. Read on to get started.

What Should I Include?

When you’re blessing your altar or magical tools, you might wonder what to include, especially if you are just getting started. The sky is the limit to what you can include, but there are some things today’s magical practitioners tend to buy. An altar is usually a table, but can be whatever you want it to be. Your tools can include things like incense, ceremonial blades, or even sacred images.

Your Altar

Your Altar

An altar is basically some form of furniture you set up. On the furniture will be cloths of various colors and fabrics. A lot of people don’t know that one of the most important things for your altar is the type of privacy it has.

Furniture

An altar is a sacred working surface you use in your rituals. In places of worship, tables are set up permanently for this. For your own personal altar, you might decide to use a foldup card table you can transport to and from places. You might also decide you want a permanent altar set up and seek out the perfect table. Antique malls, and your own family’s basements and storage areas can reveal special, meaningful, or unique tables that already hold great magic for you. You may also decide to build your own altar table.

Altars don’t have to be tables, though. They can be stone circles set up in your garden, or a simple tray you place on surfaces, building your setup every time. They can also be cabinets that open and close. They can be chests of drawers with a large top you use. You can place magical tools in the drawers and remove your tools when your working is finished, keeping your altar completely private. Secretary desks can be folded up with the contents of the altar tucked safely inside. Some people don’t have a complex setup. They simply light a single candle to do sacred work. Here are some tips for beginning magical spellwork: Things to Know When Casting Magick Spells

Cloths

Depending on the tools you put on your altar, you may want a sacred cloth to use. What colors represent the sacredness you want on your altar? Some people have one altar cloth they use every time, and other people have different altar cloths that they use for different purposes. The fabric it is made of should also be considered. Some people use fireproof synthetic cloths, and other people use materials that are meaningful to them like silk, lace, or even all-natural cotton. Some people don’t use an altar cloth at all, feeling that the altar and tools on it are the only things necessary. What cloth will you use on your altar?

Privacy

Your altar is sacred, and might not mean anything to anybody else but you. So, why would anybody else have easy access to it? You must decide, more than what the furniture that creates the altar will be and its cloth, where it will be. Some people keep their altar set up in their personal bedroom while other people have an altar in their garden. Some people keep their altar out and exposed, and others close it up in a cabinet or drawer. Some altars are even temporary ones, set up only when they are being used, and packed away for safekeeping immediately following. Which way is best for you? Magical Tools

Tools for magic can be anything. However, a lot of people use ceremonial blades, candles, some water element, incense and/or oils, some type of meaningful holy relics, and sacred images.

Blades

A lot of people use ceremonial daggers, swords, or other blades like arrowheads, sickles, or spears. Different magical traditions use sharp blades for different purposes, but typically in modern times, they are used for directing or cutting energy. Sickles represent ancient Druidic practices of cutting the sacred mistletoe, and bring in images of healing and fertility. Blades also represent the element of fire, which represents passion, ambition, and action. Ceremonial blades are used for casting a circle, and protecting it. Wiccans use a blade called an athame and you can learn about Wiccan readings here: What is Wicca? Insights from a High Priestess

Candles

Another way to bring the element of fire into your magic is to use candles. Some people have all different candles they use for various purposes, and some people use only one blessed altar candle at a time. Some people say each of the colors hold their own meaning, but three candle colors can be used almost universally. Plain white candles of various sizes can be used for any purpose, as can plain black ones. Red candles represent magic itself, and can be lit for any spell or ritual. You just have to decide if you will use one candle for each ritual or use the same one until it is finished and start a new one.

Water

Water

The element of water brings in the energy of healing, transformation, emotions, and purity. Some people just place some water element on their altar to represent it, but others will use water for ritual washing. Others will use holy water to purify the ritual space before ritual work or magic begins. Others will drink blessed water in ritual for rejuvenation or healing. What will you use water for on your altar?

Incense and Oils

Incense brings in the element of air to your magical altar and rituals. Each incense has its own magical attributes. For example, sandalwood purifies the ritual space and rose incense brings in goddess energy and love. Frankincense is used to both purify and protect at the same time. Dragon’s blood incense banishes negativity and enhances love workings. Oils are used as perfume, anointing, and can be burned for their power. Mint increases energy and cedar oil is used for cleansing and grounding. Lavender is used for its tranquilizing , anti-anxiety effect and helps enhance psychic abilities. Are you psychic? Relics and Images

Relics are any type of object you feel holds sacred significance. Some people use cut flowers, living plants, bones, jewelry, books, or sacred plates or chalices for offerings on their altars. Images can be photos of ancestors, icons or statues of deities and saints, artwork of spirits, or small carvings or sculptures that represent your religion or belief system. Anything that is not specifically a tool that you feel belongs on your altar, bringing the correct energy can be placed there.

Simple Magical Tool Blessings

All of the things you can include to create an altar, and then place on it, can be blessed by you anytime. There are some simple ways you can do that. You can use premade holy water although you can make your own. The light of the moon or sun can be used, as can simple prayers. Smudging is a popular way of blessing things, as is simple consecration. Sacred spaces already contain the power to bless your ritual objects, but you should never underestimate the power of love to bless things.

Holy Water

Although a lot of places sell holy water, you can make your own. Take a bowl of water and a bowl of salt. Trace the sign of your faith over the tip of the bowl of water and say “I bless thee, casting out all impurity.” Then do the same with the salt. Take a pinch of salt, gently drop it in the water, and say “You are blessed.” Use this holy water to bless anything.

Sun or Moon Blessings

Simply leave something you want blessed where the light of the sun or moon may bless it. Some people say Full Moon energy is most powerful, but others say it is the light of the New Moon that is. Sunlight is said to banish all impurities and the moon imparts nurturing protective energy. Read about New Moon magic here: New Moon Spells and Rituals

Prayers

A prayer is a simple way to bless things. Hold your object to be blessed in your hand and say “By the sacredness within me, I bless this with all my heart, all my strength, and all my will. This sacred object will serve me all the days of my life. It will be immune to all negativity, outside influences, and will serve only me. So Be It.”

Smudging

Smudging

Smudging simply means using smoke to bless things. Incense can be used for this. Some people use whole dried herbs like white sage, bundles of lavender, and sweetgrass for smudging. You can smudge people, things, or entire places. You can also smudge with resin incense or wood. White copal is used for purification, and pinion is used to heal. Proper ventilation and fireproof trays or bowls should always be used when smudging. Read about smudging with sacred tobacco here: Sacred Smoke with Tobacco- Magical and Ritual Uses

Consecration

Consecration is the act of declaring something sacred. Some people will use a special ceremony for this but other people will simply say something like “May this be made holy, no longer a mundane object, sacred to me, the powers that be, and used for all things magical. So Be It.”

Sacred Spaces

Things for your altar can be blessed at places that hold holy energy. Simply take the things you want blessed to this sacred place, and allow them to be there for a time. Some places hold so much holy power, you need only walk in to fully bless yourself and your things there. Other sacred spaces are your home and workplace. Love Blessings

Never underestimate the power of love. True love heals relationships, mends hurt feelings, and makes the pain of the past bearable. It takes away loneliness, makes you forget harsh words, and builds relationships. When the power of love resides within something, it holds some of the most powerful magic there is. To bless something with the power of love, simply hold it near your heart, and say three loving things to it, focusing the energy of love into it. For example, hold your object to bless over your heart and say “ I fill this with the love to heal pain, the love to forget harsh words, and the gentleness to say kind things.” Your object will then be blessed.

Blessings Your Way

Different blessings for your personal magical working altar and ritual tools have been listed above. There may be things that most people use that you don't like. There may be things other people don’t use that make perfect sense to you. There are some things to keep in mind when you are coming up with your own kinds of blessings for things.

1) Think about times and seasons and what powers they hold. Do you prefer the power of the sun or the moon? If the moon holds more power, does the phase of the moon matter? Does nighttime or daytime hold more power for you? Do you prefer to do your blessings during sunrise or sunset? Which season works best for you? Do you work better when things are silent, and others are sleeping, or when people are out and about, and active? Experiment with light, dark, day, night, and the power of the sun, moon, and seasons and see what times hold more power for you.

2) While there are accepted magical attributes for certain colors, what colors hold more power for you? What oils, incense, or crystals hold the most power for you? Each of us are different, and need to use the things that speak to us most. Consult all the guides that state what thing’s powers are, but listen to your own inner voice above all.

3) Which of the five elements speak most to you and how do you prefer to use them for ritual? Some people light a single candle and that is all they need. Others use sacred water alone. Still others find all the magic they need among the trees of the forest.

4) Do you prefer to do your blessings rituals solo or is group magic more powerful for you? Try both ways to see what works best.

5) Do you prefer to write out rituals, spells, and chants before using them or do you prefer to speak from the heart? If you write things out beforehand, keep copies of everything you write so you can use the rituals again in the future.

Your magical altar and tools are sacred, personal, and should be blessed. You can have other people bless them for you, but at some point you may want to bless them yourself. The light of the sun or moon, homemade holy water, or love energy can be used. More than just doing what other people say, learn your own ways of blessing things. Nobody’s spiritual power is more sacred than yours for doing your own blessings.
