What’s a Haunted Doll?
Dolls are small figures that look like people and are typically children's toys. They are found in every culture of the world throughout history. The first clay dolls known to us were found in the temples and tombs of ancient Egypt. Some were used as religious figures, but some were toys for children. Paddle dolls in Egypt were even older and first were found during the pre-dynastic period. These had a flat body and long flowing hair or could have been made of wood, bone, stone, or clay. These were found buried with the dead possibly as gifts to be used in the afterlife or they could have been used for good fortune. Haunted dolls aren't just any old doll. Haunted dolls have some type of spirit energy in them. They either have positive or negative energy, or a spirit attached to them. Some people believe that if a doll is haunted, physically its appearance will start to change. Other people believe that haunted dolls can make things happen. They can provide comfort, emotional support, or allow the spirit of the deceased to watch over the living. Some people say that haunted dolls aren't good. They say that they cause sickness, injury, or even death. Houses can become haunted too. Is yours? Find out here: How Can You Tell if Your House is Haunted?
How Do Dolls Become Haunted?
If something is haunted, that just means that it's got some spiritual energy in it. Anything could become haunted. However, dolls, especially dolls that belong to children, are highly likely to absorb powerful spiritual energy. This is because of how dolls are used by children. Children spend a lot of time with their dolls. Some children carry their favorite dolls everyplace they go. They take them on road trips, on airplanes, to and from school, and they especially cuddle with them at night while they're sleeping, sad, or when they are afraid.
Dolls become non-living companions for children. The more emotional energy the child releases around the doll, the more powerful the doll’s energy becomes. What happens over time is the energy from that child is absorbed into the doll. This isn't unusual though. Things that we touch and use often absorb our energy. Your clothing, your car keys, your wallet, your favorite jewelry, and the furniture that you use most will absorb a lot of your personal energy. Energy can be used in powerful magic. There is nothing abnormal about any of this. This phenomena is why it is difficult when somebody dies for the people who love them to get rid of their things. The energy that was absorbed into these things while the person was living will still remain. Children's dolls are especially likely to absorb powerful emotions, because children tend to have stronger energy. They feel fear, happiness, excitement, and loneliness very intensely. Why Are People Afraid of Dolls?
People find dolls frightening because they look like people- but they are not. They are afraid in some form that these inanimate objects will come to life and start doing things. The more realistic a doll looks, the more likely it is to frighten people. The larger and closer to a real human size that a doll is, the more likely people will be afraid of it. Some of the scariest dolls were produced in Germany from the 1800s through the early 1900’s. During World War One, Japan started producing some of the same dolls. They were made from bisque porcelain and were designed to look highly realistic. Today these are highly sought after collector’s items with sparkling glass eyes and an uncanny knack for being long lasting. Fear isn’t all bad though. Some people have an actual phobia called doll phobia, which is also known as pediophobia. It's a very common phobia. It is excessive and unreasonable fear of dolls. This may happen because there had been a frightening or traumatic childhood experience relating to dolls. Other people have seen or read horror fiction stories about haunted dangerous dolls. Some people just find them so uncannily realistic it terrifies them. Dolls, figurines, ventriloquist dummies, and mannequins can trigger this fear in people. Medication or psychotherapy may help with fear of dolls, but most people who are afraid of dolls completely avoid them. Read all about phobias here: Phobia- That Thing That Scares Us
Famous Haunted Dolls
Some dolls are world famous because they're haunted. Some especially haunted dolls that are famous are Annabelle, Okiku from Japan, the doll named Mandy, and the doll named Robert. Believe it or not, the author has an entire collection of haunted dolls and most importantly you might have haunted dolls too.
Annabelle
In the 1970s, American paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren were given a Raggedy Ann doll by a student nurse named Donna. Donna said the doll could move on its own and it frightened her. They spoke with a psychic who told them that the spirit of a dead six-year- old child named Annabelle resided within the doll. The Warrens told people that the doll drew blood, stabbed a detective, and needed to be placed in a case for safekeeping. Multiple films about the doll have been made, and the doll has been on tour for years visiting events and shops. Skeptics say that the Warrens are charlatans who told a lot of lies during the time when they were alive and the doll is harmless. Are you a psychic? Find out here: What Does It Mean To Be Psychic?
Okiku
And 1918, 17-year-old Eikichi Suzuki bought a doll for her his two-year-old sister Okiku. She loved the doll so much, it was her constant companion. At the age of 3 she died from an illness and the doll was intended to be buried with Okiku, but wasn’t. The family displayed the doll on their family shrine in honor of their daughter. Soon after, the family noticed that the hair on the doll's head started to grow and they believed that the spirit of their child was in that doll. The doll was named after the little girl after that and in 1938, the family gave the doll to the Mennenji Temple for safekeeping. It is said that the doll's hair still grows, and the priests at the temple display the doll and cut her hair. No malevolent behavior is reported from the doll. Mandy
In 1991, The Quesnel and District Museum in British Columbia got a strange doll that was probably from England or Germany made in the 1920’s or 30’s. It was donated by a woman who found it stored away in her grandmother’s things and said it made her uneasy. She said she heard crying noises when she discovered the doll. It is reported as having eyes that watch people, it makes things disappear, only to be found again in strange places, and people’s telephones and cameras malfunction around Mandy. A psychic on television said they believe a grief-stricken child’s spirit inhabits Mandy. Family might give you toys- or trauma. Robert
Robert is a doll that lives at the East Martello Museum in Key West, Florida. Robert Eugene Otto, also known as Gene, owned the doll. His family believed that a frustrated servant who practiced Voodoo put a curse on the doll. The family said the doll would move around the house on its own and whenever some strange mischievous thing happened, Gene would say that Robert did it. Visitors to the museum said they have seen Robert’s face changing expression and they've heard him giggle from inside his display case. The museum tells visitors to be respectful of the doll and ask the doll if they can take a photo before they do. People say that anytime you disrespect Robert, he could cause a car accident, a job loss, divorce, or even broken bones. Lady Saoirse’s Collection
The author has never feared dolls. Quite the contrary, she can’t get enough of them. Her collection comes from Japan, America, and Germany, and they range in age from the 1890’s to the 1990’s. Each of them has spirit energy in them. People immediately feel their presence when they come to visit, and some of her collection ends up in other people’s homes. The dolls are not “alive” like a human being, but they do have a will of their own and they choose who they want to live with. They love the author’s cat, Cordelia best of all, especially when she cuddles them. Cordelia is a familiar. Do you have one? Find out all about familiars here: What are Familiars?

Can Dolls Hurt Us?
Dolls are inanimate objects and cannot move by themselves. Unless someone uses a doll to hurt you or they are made of some type of toxic materials, they cannot inflict any harm. Some people believe in evil spirits inhabiting dolls that create harm, but again it wouldn't be the dolls causing harm, but the spirits themselves. Then again, there is no evidence that spirits or energy residing inside objects create problems in the physical world. If you are concerned about malevolent energy, don’t worry because you can take care of it yourself. Find out how here: How To Make Positive Energy at Work and at Home
If you're concerned about being hurt, look no further than your own neighborhood. There are people who steal, commit violent crimes, or who will just hurt your feelings. Drunk drivers, kidnappers, sexual abusers, cruel employers, and gossiping neighbors cause problems that a doll never could. All of us have been hurt by someone else in the past. So, even if you have doll phobia, try not to worry too much about a doll hurting you, because human beings hurt one another every day. You will probably never have to worry about a beloved pet hurting you. Read about ghost pets here: Ghosts of Animals; Can Animals See Ghosts?
Are All Dolls Haunted?
So, is every doll that has been owned and loved haunted? If you think haunted means something has the power to move on its own, then there is no such thing as anything being haunted. If you think haunted means that there is spirit energy in something, then everything on the planet is haunted. Spirit energy is everywhere. It is in the wind. It is in every plant or tree that grows, inside every human being, animal, and even in things like the water, rocks, and the soil. So if you believe that, then every doll is haunted.
Haunted dolls have some type of spirit energy in them. Some people are terrified of dolls because dolls bear an uncanny resemblance to living human beings, and some peop[le have doll phobia. Some famous haunted dolls include Annabelle and Robert, and you probably have haunted dolls yourself. Just don't think that a doll is going to break your bones, cause a car crash, or even give you bad dreams. Human beings do that themselves!
