What is Love?

What Is Love

Love is a powerful feeling of attraction or affection for someone or something. We may love our possessions, our jobs, or the things that we do, but for the sake of this article, we will focus on love of people. Love is a feeling that makes us want to spend time with people. It makes us want to have them in our lives long term, and it makes us want to tolerate them when their behavior is bad. It keeps people together even through great difficulties, through sicknesses, and through great conflicts within their own relationships.

You know that you love somebody when having them in your life is not physically beneficial, but emotionally you don't want to be without them. You know you love somebody when they've changed, and your relationship is not the same as it used to be, but you don't care because you still want a relationship. You know you love somebody when you want them in your life, but they say no, so you let them go. You know you love somebody when you aren't together every day anymore because your life has changed, but you still feel just as close to them as ever. Love is something that makes people set aside differences, tolerate what could be perceived as unbearable, and stick together long term. Who Do We Love?

So, who do we love? The truth is, the amount of people we love can be limitless. We can love our friends and family, and the people who we like. However, we don't have to limit ourselves to just these people when we experience love. We can love our ex lovers even if they mistreated us and we can't have them in our lives anymore. We can love our neighbors and the members of our faith groups even if we don't know them on a personal level. We can love the people in our general community even if we don't see a lot of them.

Some people believe that love has to be very personal, but it really doesn't have to be. You can be loving toward the person who cut you off in traffic because they are still a human being. You can be loving towards someone who treats you very badly simply because you don't want to act like them. You can love complete strangers and be kind and courteous to them. The customers who are unkind to you at work, the nasty inconsiderate neighbors, your ex lovers who try to destroy you, and even toxic family members are people who you can love and care about. What is the Opposite of Love?

The opposite of love can be a number of different things. It can be complacency within relationships. It can be complete indifference to other people. It can also be outright, terrifying, burning hatred.

Complacency

Complacency in a relationship means that someone is so self-satisfied that they are ignoring things and have stopped participating in the relationship. In a romantic relationship, complacent partners no longer care about being present in the relationship and just take for granted whatever you do for them. They assume that you won't leave, and they basically live their lives on their own terms and ignore you. Complacency can hurt worse than being dumped because it can be confusing. On one hand, someone has not left, but they're not actually participating in the relationship anymore. Romantic partners who ignore you, friends who don't bother to keep in touch, and family members who ignore you are complacent.

Indifference

Indifference

Indifference means that you have no interest or concern for someone. You basically ignore their existence. Strangers tend to be indifferent to one another. It's as if indifferent people are saying that they don't care if someone else even exists. Do you smile at the people who you pass on the street? Do you say hello to the people who greet you at the places of business where you spend money? Do you meet new people when you go places? If you don't, you might be indifferent. To them. Meeting strangers can be difficult- especially if THEY are difficult! Learn how to deal with difficult people here: How to Deal with Difficult People

Hatred

Hatred is different from complacency or indifference. It means intense and passionate dislike for something or someone. A lot of times, the desire to destroy or harm something or someone accompanies hatred. Quite often with hatred, there is no peace. There is fighting and active hostility including headful words. Hatred is often rooted in fear, or hurt feelings. A lot of people hate someone who they break up with who they feel wronged them. Perceiving someone you hate as a source of evil is not unusual either, because a lot of people feel that they have a reason to hate someone. This is a much stronger feeling than mildly disliking someone. Hatred tends to last over a period of time and influence retaliation.

Why Choose Love?

It may feel exhausting to love everyone and everything, but it doesn't have to. You can always choose love over hatred, indifference, or complacency, even with strangers. Why would you bother to do that? To move on from difficult situations, you can choose to love someone instead of hating them. Even if you don't necessarily move on, you can rise above situations and love instead of hating. Some people choose love so that they can make difficult or hurtful situations better with peace and healing.

To Move On

Choosing love can help you to move on from a nasty situation. That doesn't mean that you have to excuse what happened or take somebody back after they mistreated you. If you choose love and not revenge, that will help you to get away from a situation instead of continuing to participate in it. It can help to preserve your emotions and make the situation die down instead of continuing it. Sometimes moving on from pain is the most loving thing that you can do, even if it's just for self-care. Learn how to use magic for self-care here: Magical Care for Self in Stressful Times

To Rise Above Things

When things are stressful, hurtful, or just plain unnecessary, you may be called to be the big person in a situation. One way to do that is to choose love. Saying loving things instead of retaliating with inflammatory words is one way to do that. Saying that you are stepping away until the conversation can be settled as another way. If you and someone else are actively fighting as hard as you can, the situation is going to continue and get uglier over time. You can emotionally disengage and step away to be the bigger person, or to evolve beyond negative situations. You may find that life is much more peaceful when you do that.

To Make Things Better

Another benefit of choosing love is to make difficult situations better. If the parent of your child is namecalling you, trying to pick fights, and doing everything they can to be as difficult as possible, instead of reacting likewise, try being loving and kind to them. It might seem counterproductive to be nice to people who are being nasty to you. However, it might make it more difficult for them to continue being nasty to you. It's going to make them look bad and make you look good. Your emotions won't get as inflamed if you behave in loving ways instead of hurtful ways, and you will save your sanity and try to bring some peace to the situation. You have nothing to lose by choosing love. Knowing how people fight based on their Zodiac Sign can help. Learn all about that here: How the Zodiac Signs Fight

How To Choose Love

Are you convinced yet that it's better to choose love over hatred, complacency, or indifference? If you are, we have ten simple tips on how you can do that. From making love one of your top priorities in life, to practicing self-love during difficult times, choosing love can be the easiest way to live a peaceful, happy life with gentleness and compassion. Read on for ten easy ways to choose love.

Make Love Your Top Priority

Making being a loving person the top priority in your life is the number one way to choose love. If you are more concerned about being kind, considerate, and helpful to other people than anything else, you will find ways to choose love no matter what. You can even send people love letters. Learn how here: The Complete Guide to the Love Letter

Don’t React

A simple way to choose love is not to react to your upset emotions. Especially when people are trying their best to get an emotional reaction out of you. Some people know just how to push your buttons to get you to fight with them because they love the drama. Don't do it. Just emotionally disconnect and send them on their way. They will step away and find someone else to try to get a reaction from.

Reach Out First

Isn't it frustrating when you don't hear from people? Be the first to reach out to them. Let them know you miss them, love them, and want to get together with them. It's not unusual for people to get busy and forget about maintaining relationships. If you can be the person who does that, you will show a lot of love. Taureses are very good at maintaining contact with the people who they love and you can read about them here: Taurus Traits | Star Sign in the Spotlight

Be Kind

Be Kind

Being generously helpful, considerate, compassionate, and benevolent toward other people is the definition of being kind. Most people are kind to the people who they have relationships with, but not everybody is kind to strangers. If you can be kind to everybody who you meet no matter what, that will share a lot of love. Give it a try.

Celebrate Differences

We are all different from one another in some way or another. Respecting, and enjoying the beautiful diversity in humanity is one way that you can show tolerance and acceptance, and that shows a lot of love. The more you get to know people who are different from you, the more alike you realize we all are. Read about twelve different personality archetypes here: Unlocking the Magic of Archetype Power

Allow Yourself to be Vulnerable

Completely shielding ourselves emotionally from everybody will make us feel like we were protected, but all it does is isolate us. Being at least a little open to being emotionally vulnerable and experiencing love with other people is very important. Open your heart to other people and they will open themselves to you.

Be Respectful

Respect means that you care about people’s feelings, rights, needs, and what they want. Taking civil tones of voice, being patient, being courteous, and being mindful of people's requests all show respect. When you show someone respect, you validate them as a human being and it's a very loving thing to do. Learn all about getting respect here: The Art of Being Respectful and Being Respected

Choose Your Words

Words hold great power. Harsh words do not show love. Neither do harsh tones of voice. Kind words show love. Saying nothing is sometimes the most loving thing to do. Choose your words wisely to show love.

Be Thankful

Being thankful for all that you have, all that you are, and the wonderful things that people do is a wonderful way to be loving. It shows people and the universe in general that you have an attitude of gratitude and feeling appreciated means to feel loved. Learn how to be grateful here: Learning to Have a Grateful Heart

Practice Self-Love

Last but not least of all, never forget to love yourself. Allowing mistreatment, neglecting self-care, or being down on yourself are not good ways to be loving. You deserve just as much love as everybody else does, so make sure no matter what happens, to love yourself.

Life can be difficult, people can be hurtful, and being loving might seem like the least important thing during those times. Love is always the most important thing no matter what. You can always choose love no matter how hurt you are, no matter how hard you're being attacked, and no matter how difficult it may sound. Some simple ways to choose love include reaching out to people you've not heard from in a while first, being respectful, and practicing self-love. With the difficulties of life, sometimes love is the only thing we have. So always, always, always choose love.
